SanDisk Ships First 4BPC Memory Cards
Not every step forward for technology is announced with fanfare, huge product roll-outs, and a gigantic media blitz. Some advances are very quiet, like the shipment of the very first line of memory cards based around the new X4 technology. SanDisk (via Electronista) just started sending out their new line of standard SDHC and Memory Stick Pro Duo cards, which use 4 BPC storage as opposed to the standard 2 or 3 BPC.
BPC stands for "bits per cell". The increase to 4 BPC should allow for smaller 8 GB and 16 GB chips, and will scale to allow for 64 GB and larger capacity SDHC chips in the near future. The coming of 4 BPC technology will also have reprecussions in the world of solid state drives, as SSDs also use multi-level cell storage.

The catch to these cool new cards is the price. For the 16 GB model, you're looking to pay $304 . If that seems a little expensive to you, don't even bother checking out the 32 GB ($507) and 64 GB models ($811), you might end up with an aneurysm. Yes, SanDisk's new cards are the top of the line. With prices that ridiculous, they have to be.

After typing the amount on the iPhone credit card reader app, the customer just signs with his finger and provides an email address where the invoice should be sent to.

Apple To Kill DVDs For SD Cards?
Optical drives are so last century. Between flash drives and SD cards we've got all the removable, portable storage we could possibly need (at least for right now). At 1/10 the size a 32GB SD card holds about as much data as 8 DvDs. They're way more convenient to store or carry around and, while slightly more expensive per gigabyte, they're substantially more durable and way easier to store. SD cards are so superior to DvDs that it's really only a matter of time before optical drives are a thing of the past.
Seth Weintraub, of Computerworld, wrote today about his expectations that, within a generation or two, Apple will try to phase out optical drives on their MacBook line. He cited the overall superiority of SD cards as a storage platform, as well as the simple fact that removing optical drives from laptops frees up an enormous amount of space. Without a DvD player, Weintraub points out that the 15 MacBook Pro could become a 15 MacBook Air.
