Mvisto DivX and ISO Pocket Media Player Review

Taiwan based MacPower & Tytech Technology Co., Ltd. (site) sent us their new Mvisto Pocket DivX and ISO Player for review. The small Linux powered player supports HDTV quality Video and Dolby Digital or DTS quality Audio. When those media players without displays first appeared on the market last year, I was not sure why I would need one. Comparing them in my mind to PVPs with display. Now that I tried to find a robust solution to play high resolution DivX videos on my TV in the living room, I learned to love those players. Read about the "why" in my review. |

DivX Portable Media Devices
There is a new kind of portable devices that are basically external hard-drives enhanced with media playback electronics.
Sigma Designs a leading manufacturer of media signal processing electronics announces that AL Tech, DTS Infocom and Dvico introduce portable media devices powered with Sigma Designs technology.
The TViX from Dvico was already in the news and is available on Amazon.com in different hard-drive configurations.
These portable media devices typically operate as external PC storage, offering 50 to 250 GB of storage capacity using a USB 2.0 interface. As such, they can be readily loaded up with video files (MPEG-2, DivX, MPEG-4, etc.), audio files (MP3, WMA, etc.) and image files (such as JPEG). Once loaded, they become portable media players that can be used with televisions in the living room, in the car, or while traveling. Common video outputs (composite, S-video, component) and audio outputs (stereo, SPDIF) enable the device to be easily connected to any television. Users access content and control playback in a manner similar to a DVD player, using a convenient remote control that enables set-up, browsing, and playback control (play,-pause, rewind, fast-forward, etc.).
I rather have a wireless accessible DivX video player located in the living room to download movies and watch them on the TV like the D-Link DSM-320. If those portable media devices would have wireless access they would be interesting.
More details in Sigma Designs press-release.

Review Of KiSS DVD player DP-450 with DIVX
Techseekers.net has reviewed the KiSS DVD player DP-450 with MPEG4(DivX) playback.
After playing around with the Kiss DP-450 DVD/DivX player I got around to writing a review on it. It does provide excellent DivX, XviD and
RealMagic MPEG4 playback, but its not without its little problems.
Quote:
"All in all, I was impressed with the DP-450. DivX and XviD playback was outstanding, with some high quality files, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between that and a DVD.
Some DivX files can take up two CDs, and if they are SVCD it can be 3 CDs. With a DVD-R burner you can put both DivX files onto one disk enhancing the playback experience. The same applies to the 3CD SVCD. Just take the 3 MPEG2 files and put them on one DVD-R.It is such a timesaver to put the movies onto a CD-R rather than convert it to 2CD VCD to watch it in the living room. Excellent stuff. "
