New LG XNote A1 and C1 with HSDPA, WiBro and DMB
LG Electronic announces new XNote notebooks in Korea with HSDPA, WiBro and DMB connectivity.
The new XNote A1 and C1 10.6 inch notebooks weigh apparently just 1kg. The new hyper connected XNote notebooks run on an Intel Core CPU and a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GO GPU and feature a 80GB HDD. The LG XNote C1 can flip its screen over to become a tablet style computer. I cannot confirm a 100% if the C1 has a touch screen. The translation from the Korean press-release is too bad in that context.
I guess to better enjoy watching TV on the new XNotes LG added SRS WOW HD audio enhancement.

German DMB based Mobile TV Service Watcha has Launched
The first commercial broadcast mobile TV service launched in Germany under the somewhat weird name 'Watcha'.
The Watcha TV service is available for a monthly flat fee of 9,95 Euro in connection with a 24 month mobile phone contract from Debitel.
The only DMB ready mobile phone available is the Samsung SGH-P900 (looks like LG did not deliver yet the LG-V9000), which sells for 199 Euro with contract.
The TV service is only currently available in these major cities: Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart. There are still only four channels available. They now officially say that the FIFA World Cup 2006 games broadcasted (half of the games) on ZDF will be available.

LG FM35 DMB TV and PMP
LG announces in Korea the FM35 portable DMB TV and media player.
The LG FM35 measures only 92x52x14mm. The screen size is 2.4 inches. You can watch DMB TV for four hours and listen to music for a cool 55 hours on a single battery charge.
Supported media file formats include MP3, WMA, OGG, AVI and ASF.
DMB TV for mobile phones is launching in Germany this week. Forget about bringing a DMB TV like the FM35 from your next South Korea trip, as you will not be able to use it in Germany. Technically it would work, but the TV broadcast has a digital signature that you only get with the subscriptions through the mobile phone provider. Unless maybe somebody is able to hack it.

Samsung's DMB Phone SCH-B340 is Thin, but has Fat Antenna
Samsung introduced the SCH-B340 DMB Digital TV phone in Korea in February. It is the world's thinnest DMB TV phone with only 17.3mm. The product photos from February show the thin slider without the apparently necessary DMB antenna.
A review on Korean site Cetizen reveals now photos of the Samsung SCH-B340 with a fat screw-on antenna. Samsung designed the antenna and the phone stand as little keychain trinkets. Still, it would be nice if the antenna would actually be integrated in the phone or it least be an extensible one like it is on most DMB phones available.

Six Reasons Why T-DMB Is Better Than DVB-H
Mr. Jae Hong, Lee, Director General of the Korean Ministry of Information and Communications proclaimed at a keynote in Seoul six reasons on why T-DMB is better than DVB-H for mobile digital TV.
The six reasons are:
1. Lower Channel switching time (1.5s versus 5s on DVB-H)
2. No latency through time-slicing
3. 30fps versus just 15fps on DVB-H
4. Not just IP based but also providing for streaming services
5. Using 2Mhz channel requires less power and circuit complexity (DVB-H uses 8Mhz)
6. T-DMB can provide DAB audio at minimum additional cost
If you know six reasons why DVB-H is better than T-DMB please email me.

Samsung T-DMB TV Phone Comes to Europe - Will There Be a Broadcast?
Samsung announced to release their T-DMB mobile phone SGH-P900 in Europe in time for the FIFA Soccer World Cup. Meanwhile it is not clear in Germany if T-DMB broadcast will be ready in time.
On top of that, the T-DMB services in Germany are pilots and field tests so far. Will there be a broadcast after the Soccer Fest? Will it be nation wide? Who knows? The competing DVB-H digital TV standard is actually pushed hard by Nokia and others. To buy the Samsung SGH-P900 is high roller gamble for early adopters.
But maybe there will be more solid details about the T-DMB mobile TV service when we get closer to the World Cup.
