Toshiba HD-A20 HD-DVD Player Review
Our review partner Digital Trends tested the Toshiba HD-A20 HD-DVD player. Toshiba started selling the HD-A20 in April. Now Toshiba has a new generation of HD DVD players on the market with the HD-A30 and HD-A35.
Quote from the review: "An ongoing complaint has been the high price for a HD DVD player, but few seem to remember that the first DVD player cost upwards of $1000 USD dollars, or that it takes a few generations for the price of any electronic device to drop. So we should be patting Toshiba on the back for the rapid release of new models featuring prices well under $500 USD. Lets’ take their HD-A20 for example.

Samsung BDP-UP5000 Blu-ray and HD DVD Player Release Date
Samsung said in Germany at a IFA preparation event that they will ship the dual HD player BDP-UP5000 in October or November.
Samsung announced the Blu-ray and HD-DVD player BDP-UP5000 already in April.
LG got lots of attention for the first dual HD player BH100, when they announced it at the CES 2007. The only problem is still that the price of about $1,000 is way to high.
As long as you can buy a HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player together for less money a hybrid HD player is just not worth it, especially because it is the first generation of such a player.

Toshiba Car HD DVD Player
Toshiba showed a HD DVD player for cars at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2007 in Japan.
Toshiba works with Alpine Electronics on the car HD DVD player to hit the market in 2008.
It is a natural development to bring HD into cars. Do we need it? Not necessarily today, considering most in-car movie systems have very small screens. Unless of course your car got pimped by MTV and sports now a 30 inch screen in the trunk.

Wal-mart to sell cheap Fuh Yuan made HD DVD Players
Potentially big news is rolling in from China that could make an impact on the ongoing high definition disc format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray.
Update 04/27/07:
Wal-mart spokes person officially denies this rumor. See PC Mag for more details. Fuh Yuan also officially denies the deal now.
Wal-mart has supposedly ordered 2 million HD DVD player from Taiwanese OEM Fuh Yuan. These players are supposed to be priced under $300.
AVSForum has a heated discussion on this news since a couple of days. The information is still sketchy on the whole story. TDK is supposed to be involved as well. TDK has been active though in the Blu-ray camp. One comment in the discussion says even maybe we the news is just about upconverting DVD players with HDMI. This story could just vaporize as I write it.
