Toshiba threw all their anger from loosing the HD disc war with HD-DVD into making the XD-500 DVD player. The new DVD player features Toshiba's XDE technology.

Toshiba as you know lost the HD DVD format war and had to bury their HD-DVD format and leave the field to Sony's Blu-ray.
Today Toshiba announced a new DVD player technology dubbed XDE. XDE takes according to Toshiba the DVD picture quality to a whole new level. In addition to providing upconversion from 480i/p up to 1080p, XDE offers user selectable picture enhancement modes that allow for greater detail, more vivid colors and stronger contrast that bring standard DVD quality closer to the HD experience.
This is a nice try by Toshiba to reduce the value of Blu-ray by improving the DVD picture quality. Read more

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player discontinued

A Microsoft employee run blog issued a statement saying that Microsoft is discontinuing the Xbox 360 HD DVD player.

This comes as no surprise after Sony's Blu-ray format won last week. Microsoft could get a bit more official on this topic, as they have a responsibility towards their customers who paid $200 for the now worthless HD DVD drive. Read more

Onkyo to stop HD DVD Player Sales

Onkyo has reportedly halted sales of their HD DVD players.

Reports say that Toshiba will announce the end of HD DVD today in Japan, I have also read reports that say Wednesday. There are not that many companies that actually made HD DVD players beside Toshiba. Onkyo introduced their first HD DVD player at the end of last year.
The Onkyo HD805 was selling in the U.S. and Europe. Read more

German Retailer takes your old HD-DVD Player when you buy a Sony Blu-ray Player

The HD DVD camp does not have it easy these days. Saturn, one of the largest consumer electronics chains in Germany now offers a 150 Euro rebate (~$221) when you bring your old HD DVD player and buy a new Sony Blu-ray player.

So for instance if you buy the Sony BDP-S300 you pay 349 Euro instead of 499 Euro. If you compare prices you can already get the BDP-S300 for 380 Euro on German Internet shops, but Saturn also throws in 8 Blu-ray movies. This deal is nice, but more importantly is really bad PR for HD DVD. Read more

Venturer Makes Low cost HD DVD Player More Appealing

Home theater fans in the UK will have something to be happy about this holiday season with Venturer making its low cost SHD1000 HD DVD player even more attractive. The player is already packaged with a free HDMI cable and the HD DVD films Troy and Hulk.

The player will now include a voucher that allows customers to get five more HD DVD movies free via the European HD DVD Promotional Group. Coby Recalls 12,000 DVD Players Due to Fire Hazard

Coby electronics Corp. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have announced a recall on 12,000 Coby portable DVD/CD/MP3 players. The recall says that these products could overheat leading to risk of fire.

Coby states that it has received three reports of the units overheating, one of which included minor property damage from fire. No injuries have been reported. This recall covers two different portable DVD/CD/MP3 players model numbers TF-DVD170 and TF-DVD176. Read more

Wal-Mart Offers Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player for Under $100 Tomorrow Only

Get your sleep in now HD fans because if you want any chance of getting your hands on one of the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD players Wal-Mart is offering on sale tomorrow for $98.87, you had better get there early. In fact, you might want to go now.

I am betting Nintendo Wii style lines will be formed for the sale that begins at 8AM way before that time. The MSRP on the HD-A2 is $299.99, so this is likely to be the best deal you will find on a HD DVD player this holiday season.
