Black Friday DVD and Blu-ray Sale already started on J&R
In case you did not hear, Black Friday did start early this year, very early. J&R just opened their Black Friday DVD and Blu-ray Sale, where you can shop your bargain movies now without time pressure and they will ship over Thanksgiving weekend.
Prices are low enough that you cannot expect them to go lower on the actual Black Friday day. Lots of DVDs are starting as low as $3.99 including classics like A Beautiful Mind or About a Boy.

Wall-E is available for Pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray
The cuttest robot in movie history is about to be released on DVD and Blu-ray. Amazon is so excited about the Wall-E DVD release that they issued a press-release.
Wall-E will be released on Nov. 18, 2008, and customers who pre-order and select "Two-day" or "One-day" shipping will have their order arrive on the date of release. Amazon Prime customers who select "Two-day" shipping will receive Release-Date Delivery for free.

Verbatim LightScribe 8x DVD+R DL Media Now Available
Verbatim has announced that it is the first to bring DVD+R DL LightScribe media to market. LightScribe media allows compatible DVD burners to burn a label directly onto the disk. 8x is currently the fastest DVD+R DL speed available.
The media has about twice as much storage capacity as a normal DVD with the ability to hold 8.5GB of data. The Verbatim media will be available in 10-disc spindles at unannounced pricing. LightScribe media tends to cost a bit more than normal DVDs, but they shouldn’t be particularly expensive. Read more

Samsung Adds Three new DVD Burners to Line
Samsung has added a trio of new DVD burners to its line of optical drives. The units are all in the Super-WriteMaster SH-S223 line including one SATA drive and a pair of PATA drives. All share the same 22x DVD write speeds.
The drives are all internal and have 22x DVD +-R recording, 12x DVD-RAM recording, 16X DVD+R DL, 12X DVD-R DL, 8X DVD+RW, and 6x DVD-RW speeds. The drives all feature buffer under run protection and technology to reduce the noise the drives produce when in use. Read more

The Big Lebowski 10th Anniversary Limited Edition DVD comes in Bowling Ball
The Big Lebowski movie starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman is one of these cult movies I can watch over and over again. "The Dude" movie is now 10 years old and just got released as a 10th Anniversary Edition on DVD.
There is also a The Big Lebowski - 10th Anniversary Limited Edition that features the DVD set inside a Bowling ball.

Lite-On announced its latest external DVD solution today called the eSAU208. The fully featured 8x DVD burner is fully USB powered making it compact and stylish. The burner can be powered by one or two USB ports.

Toshiba XD-E500 DVD Player with XDE unveiled
Toshiba as you know lost the HD DVD format war and had to bury their HD-DVD format and leave the field to Sony's Blu-ray.
Today Toshiba announced a new DVD player technology dubbed XDE. XDE takes according to Toshiba the DVD picture quality to a whole new level. In addition to providing upconversion from 480i/p up to 1080p, XDE offers user selectable picture enhancement modes that allow for greater detail, more vivid colors and stronger contrast that bring standard DVD quality closer to the HD experience.
This is a nice try by Toshiba to reduce the value of Blu-ray by improving the DVD picture quality.

Netflix DVD Shipping back to Normal
Netflix tested its subscribers this week with a collapse of their shipping centers. The movie rental by mail pioneer experienced 3 days of severe issues at their shipping centers.
On Friday the company announced to have resolved the issues and the shipping centers work normal again.
Customers will get a 15% credit to their next billing statement and new customers who are still in their trial period will get another week of free trial.

Blockbuster and NCR to Launch DVD Vending Kiosks
Blockbuster Video is intent on competing on all fronts when it comes to DVD rentals. When it perceived Netflix and its online model to be a threat, Blockbuster launched its own online rental service. Redbox kiosks are the next target for Blockbuster with a recent announcement that Blockbuster and NCR will be launching DVD vending kiosks.
The kiosks will be launched in small numbers in a pilot program before possibly being rolled out nationwide. Blockbuster says that 50 kiosks will be launched in Q3 2008. At first Blockbuster says that the kiosks will be used for rentals, but could be upgraded in the future for game sales, digital downloads and movie sales. The locations and markets for the first 50 units has not been announced at this time. Read more

Verbatim Brings Color Backgrounds to LightScribe DVD Media
When it comes to labeling discs like CDs and DVDs you can go a couple ways. You can get out a marker and write on the discs, which is rather messy and the labels may not stay. Or you can use a direct labeling media and DVD burner like LightScribe.
For a while you could get CD media for LightScribe that offered color backgrounds. Today LightScribe and Verbatim announced that DVD+R media is now available for LightScribe with color backgrounds. The media can be had with red, orange, green, yellow and blue backgrounds to add more creativity to the LightScribe labeling process. Read more

Samsung Adds to TruDirect Portable DVD Writer Line
Samsung has added to its TruDirect line with the addition of a new portable DVD writer that also provides DVD title creation. The new drive is called the TruDirect SE-T084M. the drive weighs less than one pound and works without a power cord.
The drive allows users to connect a digital video camera to the PC and press play on the camera. A TruDirect icon will pop up allowing the press of a record button and the TruDirect SE-T084M does the rest. Samsung says that the drive can create a DVD of 4.1GB in only 30 minutes. Supported formats include 8X DVD+R and DVD-R writing, 6X DVD+R and -R Dual Layer writing, and 5X DVD-RAM writing. The drive will be available in July 2008 for $149. The image here is via Krunker.
