Sears announced a creative award program today that ties in with the $10 Holiday DVD movie release deals that Walmart and Amazon are offering. Sears.com is rewarding customers who purchase a qualifying DVD on Sears.com, Target.com, Amazon.com or Walmart.com with a credit of up to $10.

So if you are planning to buy something on Sears.com you can get a $10 savings when you have purchased a new DVD release. This deal does not save a bundle, but it is creative especially because Sears accepts receipts from competing stores.

Merry Madagascar DVD Exclusively on Sale At Walmart

Today Walmart announced an exclusive deal to sell the Merry Madagascar DVD. Merry Madagascar is a 30-minute animated Christmas special that premieres on NBC on November 17th.
Walmart will carry the standard Merry Madagascar DVD movie for $5 and a deluxe DVD version with additional content for $8. These DVDs are very nice stocking stuffers.

Walmart stores will also offer new Merry Madagascar licensed pajamas, slippers, socks, throw blankets and other holiday gifts starting this week. Read more

Best Buy and Netflix announced this week that the new Insignia Advanced Series Blu-ray Player NS-WBRDVD and the Insignia Connected Blu-ray Player NS-BRDVD3 (photo) are streaming Netflix movie rentals.
Both new Insignia Blu-ray players are Internet ready, giving Netflix members on an unlimited plan access to a growing library to watch instantly on their TV. Hollywood is getting ready to launch the biggest blockbuster movies and TV series of the year on DVD and Blu-ray for the Fall and Holiday season.
The editors at Amazon did a great job picking the top 25 movie and TV releases that are coming up in the next month leading up to the Holiday shopping season (September 1st and November 30th).

Flex DVD is a Green Eco-Friendly DVD

A new type of DVD disc has been unveiled that is flexible and eco-friendly called the Flex DVD. The lightweight and flexible DVD offers the same storage capacity as a standard DVD, but can be bent and flexed without causing damage to the disc.

The discs are aimed at content providers that mail discs to consumers because the thin size of the disc makes for less postage and the flexible disc can move through sorting machinery at the post office sort facilities. Read more

Apple To Kill DVDs For SD Cards?

Optical drives are so last century. Between flash drives and SD cards we've got all the removable, portable storage we could possibly need (at least for right now). At 1/10 the size a 32GB SD card holds about as much data as 8 DvDs. They're way more convenient to store or carry around and, while slightly more expensive per gigabyte, they're substantially more durable and way easier to store. SD cards are so superior to DvDs that it's really only a matter of time before optical drives are a thing of the past.

Seth Weintraub, of Computerworld, wrote today about his expectations that, within a generation or two, Apple will try to phase out optical drives on their MacBook line. He cited the overall superiority of SD cards as a storage platform, as well as the simple fact that removing optical drives from laptops frees up an enormous amount of space. Without a DvD player, Weintraub points out that the 15” MacBook Pro could become a 15” MacBook Air.

Universal Music and Gemalto Offer SIM Card DVD Music Hybrid

Gemalto and Universal Music have announced the introduction of a new music delivery format called the Smart Video Card. The card is a DVD-compliant optical disc embedded into the body of a regular SIM card.

The Smart Video Card can hold 120MB of content, which can be played in a standard DVD player and can include both video and audio content. The format allows the music to be listened to on a PC, mobile phone, or MP3 player. Read more

Sony DVDirect VRD-MC6 unveiled

Today Sony debuted its next-generation multi-function DVDirect DVD recorder VRD-MC6 , which can transfer both high-definition and standard-definition home videos and digital photos to DVD discs without using a computer.
It looks like the Sony DVDirect device has enough users out there that it makes sense for Sony to update the line with a new version.

The new VRD-MC6 model has a 2.7-inch color LCD screen for previewing video or up to six digital photos at a time, and its overall size is almost 60% smaller than its predecessor. Read more

HDTV Popular but Blu-ray Adoption Lukewarm, HD DVD Still Growing!?

According to Harris Interactive, the Blu-ray format may have won the format war, but consumers are still very slow to adopt the format. According to the firm 11% of Americans own a HD DVD player and 7% own a Blu-ray player while 9% own the PS3 meaning 16% of Americans can play Blu-ray films.

The strange fact from Harris is that HD DVD player sales are UP 11% in 2009. Sales are up on a format that's been defunct since late 2007? Harris claims that the increase in HD DVD player sales is about the same as the increase in Blu-ray sales. Read more

GE Storage Breakthrough Puts 100 DVDs on a Single Disc

GE has made a storage breakthrough reports the New York Times that allows a density on a single disc high enough to store 100 DVD movies. The disc itself is a standard CD or DVD size and is a success in the laboratory stage at this time. There is more work that needs to be done to get the technology into a form that can be mass produced affordably according to GE.

The breakthrough uses holographic storage processes that stores data in light patterns in a light-sensitive material. The tiny holograms made during the process act like microscopic mirrors according to the NYT to refract light patterns when a laser shines on them allowing the data on each hologram to be read. Kanguru Unveils Fastest DVD Duplicator

Kanguru has announced a new DVD duplicator that it claims to be the fastest in the industry. The new duplicator copies DVDs at 22x recording speeds and uses SATA drives for fast transfer from the hard drive to the duplication software.

The company says that the duplicator can copy a full 4.7GB single layer DVD in under 5 minutes. The duplicator is capable of duplicating CDs and DVDs and connects to a PC via USB. The internal hard drive has 250GB of storage for holding digital data to be copied. Read more
