ASUS DisplayLink Certified LCDs Shipping in July

ASUS announced today that its DisplayLink LCDs will be available in July. The DisplayLink certified VW223B is a 22-inch LCD with a 1680x1050 resolution, 3000:1 contrast ratio and a 5MS response time. The display also features a built-in USB hub for connection of six additional monitors thanks to the integrated DisplayLink DL-160 chip.

Asus will also have a VW202B DisplayLink certified LCD available the same month. The VW202B is a 20.1-inch LCD with the same 1680x1050 resolution. It lacks the USB hub of the large display, and has slightly less viewing angles but shares the other features of the VW223B LCD. Pricing information is unknown at this time. Read more

Samsung Announces CX Series Displays for Commercial Use

Samsung has a new line of LCD HDTV displays intended for use in commercial settings. The line is called the CX series and includes features like a digital tuner, HDMI, integrated speakers and integrated network PCs. The displays also feature anti burn-in technology.

The 400CX has a resolution of 1366 x 768 and the 400CXn has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The 460CX and 460CXn both sport 3000:1 contrast ratios and 8ms response times. Samsung’s press release on the displays has some obvious errors so no more details are available at this time. Read more

Displaytech Filling Orders for Pico Projectors

Displaytech announced today that it is now filling production orders for its tiny FLCOS microdisplay for use in Pico Projectors that is destined to be integrated into cell phones and other mobile devices. Orders for the VGA, WVGA, and SVGA FLCOS microdisplays will be integrated into pico projectors and head-mounted displays.

The tiny FLCOS microdisplays measure only 11.5mm high and consume less than 100mW of power. Displaytech says that over 18,000,000 FLCOS microdisplays have shipped for use in consumer electronics products. Read more

AOC Announces 2230Fh Display

AOC announced its latest LCD monitor called the 2230Fh that features multiple HDMI, VGA, and DVI inputs. The display offers full HDTV capability, has a 22-inch screen size, and has a 20000:1 contrast ratio.

Inputs include DVI-D and HDMI with HDCP for protected content from Blu-ray drives. The display has integrated speakers and is plug and play compatible. The response rate for the panel is 2ms and the case is a glossy piano black for good looks. The MSRP for the display is $299.99. Read more

HP introduces DreamColor Display

HP has introduced what it calls the first affordable color-critical display. The HP DreamColor display can reproduce more than 1 billion colors with a 30-bit LED backlit display. The DreamColor display is shipping now for $3499.

HP says that the new display delivers more than 64 times as many colors as a mainstream LCD. It also claims that reds, blues, and greens are deeper than that blacks are 4 times deeper in the DreamColor display and whites are adjustable. One button access to all standard color pre-sets is offered as well. The size offerings for the DreamColor display were not mentioned. Read more

Philips Introduces 52-inch 3D Display

Philips has introduced a new 52-inch 3D display that is designed for digital signage, pro-Av and entertainment applications. The display uses Philips’ WOWvx technology to allow 3D viewing without the need for glasses.

The 52-inch auto-stereoscopic display is based on a full 1080p HD panel with 700 cd/m2 of brightness, 2000:1 contrast ratio and a response time of 8 ms. Philips says that the display will be available in Q4 2008. Pricing is not available at this time. Read more

For many users out there a second LCD would be a welcome addition to the desktop. The problem is that many notebooks and PCs only have one display adapter and adding a second video card can’t always be done. Kensington has a new Dual Display adapter that makes adding a second display easy.

The adapter adds a second DVI display using USB DisplayLink technology. The adapter is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X platforms. NEC unveils Heart shaped LCD Display

Ok, we get it now: LCD panel manufacturers can make displays in all kinds of shapes from now on. Last week LG Display introduced round LCD displays and today NEC shows off a heart shaped LCD Display.

NEC LCD Technologies says that shape restrictions have eased significantly with their new LCD TFT technology.
The heart LCD Display prototype is 40mm wide and 36mm high and has 146px/inch. Read more

Spray-On Solar-powered OLED Displays

This is one of the coolest future products I have heard about in a while: A spray-on OLED display that is self-powered through solar energy.

Japanese Mitsubishi Chemicals and Sumitomo Chemical work on spreadable electronics. The molecular soup would have OLED and Solar cell building blocks that could be spread or even sprayed ultra-thin onto walls or gadgets. Read more

Round LCD Displays unveiled by LG Display

LG Display unveils the world’s largest 6-inch elliptical and 1.4-inch circular-shaped LCD displays.

The 6-inch elliptical LCD measures 78.8 mm in height and is 131.4 mm wide, while the 1.4-inch circular LCD measures 35.5 mm in diameter. Both LCD displays are capable of displaying up to 262,000 colors and have a near 160 degree viewing angle. Read more

Don't mess with the Zohan Theater Display with Bluetooth

Adam Sandler’s new flick You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is coming soon to theaters. As part of the promotion for the movie some theaters will get a display that features a stylist’s chair. When movie goers sit in the chair they will be able to download voicetones to their cell phones.

The special displays will be in 25 Regal Entertainment theaters nationwide starting on May 2nd. Fans will be able to use their Bluetooth phones to get six free voicetones without needing Internet connectivity. Read more

Hitachi UltraThin 1.5-inch Displays Now Available

At CES back in January one of the most impressive things I saw were the UltraThin line of TVs from Hitachi. These TVs are only 1.5-inches thick and the displays are now available to consumers in America. Hitachi says the displays will be available through retail and specialty AV dealers nationwide.

The displays will be available in four sizes including 32-inch, 37-inch, 42-inch and 47-inch. These displays are also designed to look good with pleasing aesthetics all around the TV so it can be seen from any side. Read more

Retinal Imaging Display Glasses still not on the Market

When the Apple patent about a Laser HMD appeared last week, it trigged something in my head - a distant memory - I could not put my finger on it though until today when I stumbled over the Brother wearable Retinal Imaging Display.

There it was again. Back in 2001 (timeworn I4U post) I wrote about Microvision's Retinal Scanning Displays that would project images directly on your eye with laser beams.
Seven years later and I still cannot by video glasses that look like normal reading or sunglasses. Read more

HP and DreamWorks Animation show off New Display Tech

HP and DreamWorks Animation announced a new display technology that aims to fix a problem for digital content creators—keeping consistent color. The technology is called HP DreamColor Technology computer display and it promises predictable color and a simple color management process.

The display provides the industry’s first combination of true 30-bit color enabling a range of 1 billion colors in a LED backlit LCD. Panasonic Cell Phone with Plasma Display

This is something you just don’t hear every day. Panasonic announced that it will be putting a low-voltage plasma display into a mobile phone to operate on AT&T's new Mobile TV service. The mobile TV service will feature content from CBS, Fox, MTV, and more.

The tiny plasma display will be built by AbleComm and is reported to run on only 1.5 volts of power and won’t require special wiring or power supplies. The tiny plasma displays will also find their way into other electronic devices from phones to fax machines and door intercom systems. Read more
