USB 3.0 gets a lot of attention the Intel Developer conference IDF this week. You almost get the feeling USB 3.0 is finally here for the masses, but in reality it is just starting.

ExpressAdapt Makes PCMCIA Slot into ExpressCard Slot
If you have a computer that doesn’t feature an ExpressCard slot, but you have an ExpressCard device you are dying to use Synchrotech has an adapter that is perfect for you. The ExpressAdapt will turn your old PCMCIA slot into a USB mode ExpressCard slot.
The maker claims the adapter needs no drivers to operate and uses USB 2.0 speeds, which are fast enough for mobile broadband modems to be used in the adapter. Read more

PCMCIA Says Update to ExpressCard Standard Coming
The PCMCIA announced today that the ExpressCard standard is getting updates to allow for faster speeds. The ExpressCard standard is currently at Release 1.2. PCMCIA made the announcement at CeBIT today.
The update is being done to bring the ExpressCard standard into compliance with the recently released PCI Express V 2.0 specification. The new update will allow for speeds of up to 5Gbps. Also announced was a new USB 3.0 specification. Read more

Verizon Wireless KPC680 ExpressCard
Verizon Wireless announced the Kyocera KPC680 ExpressCard would be available on its EVDO network starting November 30. The card operates on the Verizon Wireless Rev A network within the companies BroadbandAccess network.
With the Kyocera KPC680 ExpressCard, users can download at speeds averaging 500-800 kbps. The card is available for $49.99 after a $50 mail in rebate and two-year agreement. Read more

SanDisk Announces 16GB ExpressCard Flash Drive
SanDisk launched a new ExpressCard flash memory card today with 8GB or 16GB of storage space. The new devices are aimed at the professional camcorder market that uses this format over hard drives or disc based systems.
The SanDisk ExpressCard is expected to be available in November in both capacities. Recording time at 35MB/s will be approximately 30 minutes on the 8GB card and 60 minutes on the 16GB card. Sony is the first major manufacturer to embrace the new storage medium with its new XDCAM EX camcorder. Read more

D-Link DWA-643 Xtreme N ExpressCard Official
D-Link announces offically a draft 802.11n ExpressCard (smaller formfactor than PCMCIA Cards) today for notebooks as well as a the DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express (PCIe) card for PCs.
The D-Link DWA-643 supports besides the new draft 802.11n also the old 802.11g and 802.11b wifi standards. Of course the new ExpressCard supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 security network security.
draft 802.11n promises 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g.
