Facebook Groups 'Hacked' For A Good Cause
If you're a regular user of Facebook (who isn't these days?) you have probably joined up with your share of groups. Facebook groups are sort of like a combination of club and petition, except for being totally useless and so flooded with spam as to be unsuited for anything but a novelty. As you can probably tell, I'm not a big fan of them. Well today it looks like my distaste for Facebook groups was reasonable after all. It turns out they're incredibly vulnerable to the actions of assholes with a tiny bit of knowledge.
Loose wire blog reports that over 300 different Facebook groups have been taken over today by a group called Control Your Info. Here's a link. Some folks are calling this a 'hack', but that's not really true. The groups were hijacked by way of an existing, perfectly legal and transparent feature within Facebook. All the 'hacker' did was search groups who'd had an admin leave, and then joined as an admin. This gave them the ability to change the name of the group. Once they had control, they left this note;

New Virus Masquerades As Facebook Password Reset
Heads up, readers. There's another deadly (well, not really. But it's pretty bad.) trojan virus squirreling around the Internet that could be a threat to you. Mashable.com reports that the virus comes in the form of an email from 'Facebook' asking for confirmation of a password reset. The 'new password' is hidden within an attachment. Opening it will fill your computer with more poison than a cyanide factory stocking up before the holidays.

Microsoft Signs Bing Deal With Facebook, Twitter
Microsoft made waves today with the announcement that they signed two separate, non-exclusive deals with Facebook AND Twitter. (All Things Digital) This deal will allow Bing to integrate a real-time feed of updates from both websites into the Bing search engine. The deal will be announced officially by Microsoft digital head Qi Lu later today at the Web 2.0 Summit.
Both Twitter and Facebook are also in talks with Google to provide a similar service, but no agreement has yet been reached. This marks the first time that data and services are available through Bing, but not through Google. At least, theoretically it does. Integration of both sites will take several weeks (if not more) to nail down. It's still possible for Google to sign an agreement and beat Redmond to the punch, albeit not likely.

Facebook Lite Launches in U.S., India
Smartphones are awesome. They give you access to the Internet in the palm of your hand wherever you go. Unfortunately, that Internet access sometimes comes at speeds so slow they make you nostalgic for the days of dial-up. When your 3G connection is acting spotty at best, loading graphics/photo intensive websites like Facebook can be a chore. That's why Facebook has launched a new version, called "Facebook Lite".
Inside Facebook states that the app is currently only available in the U.S. and India. In terms of design, Lite is basically a streamlined 'feed' version of the social networking site we all know and love (or love to hate). There's a newsfeed up top, a stories feed, a note feed, a photo and video section, and an events feed. Personal profiles are kept bare and, unless you specifically look for photos or videos, you'll only deal with a minimal amount of clutter.

Now you'll be able to write and read notes, see your friends' birthdays, upload videos and folders, visit links via a built-in browser, make friend requests, and much, much more.

Facebook for the Third World: Facebook Lite Enters Testing
Last night, a whole bunch of users received emails stating that they had been chosen as beta testers for 'Facebook Lite'. The links contained in these invites did not work, sending users to the same old Facebook they use every day. Confusion reigned, until Facebook came out with an official response and let users know that they had goofed and accidentally sent out a lot of extra beta invites.
TechCrunch's report on the incident includes screenshots from those users lucky enough to see the actual beta page. According to the Facebook team, Lite is a stripped-down version of Facebook designed to load quickly and run smoothly, even on slow connections. It allows users to accept friends, share photos, write on walls, and give status updates.

Facebook Buys FriendFeed
FriendFeed, a service that allows users to incorporate all of their social networks into a single news feed, has been acquired by Facebook. The announcement was made this morning by the FriendFeed official blog. This acquisition should not alter the status of the FriendFeed product in any way right now. Integration with Facebook may come in the future, but those plans have not been settled yet.
According to TechCrunch this deal was more about Facebook getting the FriendFeed team than the actual product itself. Both companies apparently had a very friendly relationship, and Facebook was impressed with the innovation shown by the folks at FriendFeed. Their twelve employees will be scattered about Facebook and integrated into new positions.
