3GSM is now Mobile World Congress
The GSMA is rebranding the 3GSM World Congress and its sister event in Asia to Mobile World Congress and Mobile Asia Congress respectively.
Apparently the GSMA wants to broaden the appeal of the show to other industries with the rebranding.
It is not the name of the show that counts, its the attending companies and if the show is seen as a forum to make deals and launch new products.

Latte Slim11b GSM Unlocked Mobile Phone Review
Today we are going to check out a cool unlocked GSM portable phone from Latte Communications. If you have never heard of Latte Communications don’t let that scare you off. While this phone gives up some features to the big names in the cellular industry, the svelte design will make up for that lack with many users.
Many cellular phone users (like my mom) have no idea what Bluetooth or one touch dialing is, and don’t care to know. For all the users out there who just want a small, attractive phone to place and receive calls the Latte Slim11b is for you. Read more

Toshiba announced at the 3GSM 2007 two Windows Mobile Smartphones: PORTÉGÉ G900 and PORTÉGÉ G500.
Both new Toshiba smartphones feature a fingerprint sensor for access control. This is great for business users, who actually use a pin code to unlock their phone every time they want to use it. Now they just need to touch the phone to get access.
The Windows Mobile 6.0 running Toshiba PORTÉGÉ G900 features a slide out full QWERTY keyboard, 3 inch WVGA screen, Triband, HSDPA, 3G, EDGE, Bluetooth, WiFi and USB connectivity, 2MP camera and a miniSD card slot.

3GSM 2007 Highlights and a Disappointment
Yesterday the mobile phone companies tried to top each other with the number of announcements of new mobile devices for the start of the 3GSM 2007 Conference in Barcelona.
The biggest trends is sure HSDPA. A new 3G phone needs to have HSDPA, there is no way around it. It is great that the handset guys already offer HSDPA, where most 3G users are still putting out the champagne to celebrate a decent 3G connection whenever they encounter one. Still if you want a somewhat future proof phone, HSDPA is a must.
In context of this comes actually my biggest disappointment of the 3GSM so far. The new Neonode N2 is not 3G. It also does not have Wi-fi. For Europe this is a no-go for me. Neonode tried to tease us hard, but the new Neonode is not by far as innovative as their first Neonode N1 was back in 2002/2004. Are they now closer to the market with the N2? Sure the Apple iPhone is also just GSM, but Apple can also forget to show up with a GSM iPhone in Europe. For the US this is ok to boot, but a 3G iPhone needs to come soon there too. I see the only chance for the new Neonode N2 to get a US carrier deal quickly that wants to offer a smaller and hopefully cheaper alternative to the Apple iPhone.
