Google Maps Navigation: Doom For GPS Manufacturers? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Can you think of any product you'd be happy to pay hundreds of dollars AND a monthly fee for if an equally good version was available for free? No? Then you can understand why the announcement of Google Maps Navigation is a bad thing for GPS makers like TomTom and Garmin. GMN, which is currently in beta, will feature turn-by-turn voice directions.

And, like all Google products, it's going to be 100% free. This means that, in the very near future, you'll be able to get turn-by-turn navigation on your smartphone at no extra cost. Apple Cooking Up Google Maps Replacement? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, recently had to leave his position on the Apple board of directors because both companies had become too competitive. Once, both tech giants got along well. They were both "the little guy" compared to giants like Microsoft, and they both had a reputation for being the coolest companies on Silicon Valley. Google and Apple shared boards of directors, and may even have had agreements to not poach employees. They were the best of friends.

But now, thanks to Android and the App Store and the march of time, Apple and Google are at each others throats like a couple of angry dogs. That's good for us, the customers, because it means we get to watch both corporations create cool new products to try and outshine the other guy. For example; it looks like Apple is cooking up an alternative to Google Maps, according to Seth Weintraub at Computerworld.

Google Maps Beta

Topic:

Google Maps Beta Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Gear Live reports about the new Google map service.

Quote:
" I did a few searches on Google Maps where I knew the fastest route like the back of my hand. Most sites like Mapquest and Yahoo Maps would take me a round about way, but Google used all the backroads I take to give me the fastest route. Google appears to be using TeleAtlas for its mapping data. The coolest feature is the ability to drag and zoom around the map, and its pretty darn fast as well, no waiting forever for the page to reload when you hit the zoom button. One negative that I found was that you have to put a street number in, whereas with MapQuest you can put just a street and it will display a range of numbers to pick from. "
