Samsung S1 Mini and S2 portable USB HDDs unveiled Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Samsung unveiled the S1 and S2 stylish portable hard-drives today in Korea. LG introduced similar fashion portable hard-drives back in July with the LG XD1. I guess Samsung just did not want to be left behind here.
The Samsung S1 mini contains a 1.8 inch hard-drive, where as the Samsung S2 portable uses 2.5 inch HDDs.
The stylish and cleanly designed Samsung portable USB drives come in piano black, snow white, wine red, and chocolate brown. Read more

The new updated drives are the 1.5TB SimpleTech Pro Drive and the Duo Pro Drive 3TB RAID 0/1 solution. Both of the external hard drives include a quad interface with eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400, and USB 2.0 connections.

Data transfer rates are up to 3Gbps with eSATA. SimpleTech offers a ProSpeed eSATA PCI adapter card for $69.99 to add eSATA to desktop systems lacking the significantly faster connection. The Dup Pro drive is $279.99 for 1TB, $419.99 for 1.5TB, and $549.99 for 2TB. Pricing is not yet set for the 3TB version that will ship in late Q4. The Pro Drive is $159.99 for 500GB, $209.99 for the 750GB, and the 1.5TB version will ship in Q4 at undisclosed pricing. Read more

The small HDDs are intended to be used in consumer electronics and PCs. Performance from the drives should be decent with a 5400-rpm rotation speed.

The drive uses the SATA 3 GB/s interface and features a free fall sensor to enhance shock protection. The areal density for the drive is 378.8 GB/in. Power consumption is low at 0.0016 watts-per-GB. Read more

The drive is also available in 400GB capacity.

Other features of the drive include a 3 Gb/s transfer rate and SATA connectivity. WD says that the Scorpio Blue is the highest capacity 2.5-inch 9mm thick drive to ship to date. The drive was developed for OEM use. The drive will retail for $219.99 for the 500GB and $189.99 for the 400GB. Read more

Toshiba says that this is the world's first dual-platter 240GB drive and the world's first single platter 120GB drive in the 1.8-inch size.

The hard drive will eventually find its way into MP3 players and camcorders among other things and will ship in time for holiday shopping. It's safe to say that we will be seeing 240GB iPods and Zune's using the drive. Read more

Apparently Microsoft lifted the HDD storage limit on the low-cost XP license to 160GB.
MSI already offers also some 120GB MSI Wind models on their shop. Other features are the same, only the hard-drive sizes vary. Read more

The drive uses four platters to reach its capacity and Seagate says that this is the biggest increase in hard drive capacity in 50 years.

It has been about a year since Seagate launched its 1TB hard drive. The drive is called the Barracuda 7200.11 and spins at 7200 rpm. Seagate has also announced new notebook hard drives that both have a 500GB storage capacity. One of the notebook drives comes in 5400 rpm and the other is 7200 rpm, both have the same 500GB capacity. The drives will be available in Q4 2008 at undisclosed pricing. The 1.5TB drive also features the option of bulk data encryption with AES encryption. Read more

That didn’t stop TrendFOCUS from putting out its own report that says SSDs aren’t a factor today but in the future they will replace tens of millions of HDDs.

The report does offer a lofty number though saying that SSDs will replace over 50 million HDDs within a few years. The enterprise market will be the first place SSDs are adopted and the mobile market will follow once prices come down and capacities go up. Read more
