Onkyo HT-SR800 7.1 Surround system in a Box w/ HDMI Pass Through
As cool as the other two low cost home theater in a box systems we talked about a bit ago are, the Onkyo HT-SR800 is definitely the product for home theater lovers on a budget. Unlike the other two systems which were 5.1 surround capable, the HT-SR800 is a full 7.1 surround system with 110w per channel. Other notable features are that the receiver is both XM and Sirius satellite radio ready and has Audyssey 2EQ/HTiB calibration.
The receiver uses HDMI pass-through switching, processing and amplification for multi channel audio formats. "As high definition sources and displays finally make their way into the mass market, the need for simple, yet high quality audio systems is greater today than ever before," comments Onkyo Marketing Manager Paul Wasek. "HD-DVD and Blu-Ray not only deliver the highest video quality ever available at home, they also carry the promise of matching audio reproduction as well. The HT-SR800 home theater package makes that promise a reality, giving consumers a simple, high-quality solution for high definition audio with as powerful switching and control features to make a complete theater systems easy to set up, operate, and enjoy." ASUS Debutes Wireless HDMI at CeBIT
ASUS was showing off something very interesting for the home theater lovers at CeBIT this year. How does Wireless HDMI grab you? The mere though of being able to connect my HD projector to my HD cable box without wires makes me giddy as a school boy on field day.
The wireless HDMI transmitter/receiver is said to cost about the same as 10m of high-quality EMI-shielded HDMI cable, but that is as precise as they get on pricing. We can assume that we are talking about somewhere in the $100 to $150 range for the system. Read more

Evergreen Allows You to Connect Two HDMI Devices to One HDMI Input on the Cheap
If you are the owner of a HDTV, even a mere year or so old you may be stuck with a problem you haven’t even noticed yet, one HDMI port. A while back, one HDMI port was enough and many HDTVs shipped with a single.
However, as any one who has jumped into the HD age can tell you one HDMI doesn’t really cut it. You need one for your HD Cable or satellite converter and one for your Blu-ray or HD DVD player at a minimum. Unless you enjoy making trips to the TV to change your HDMI cable form the cable box to your high def DVD player you are going to need something like this switch from Evergreen. Read more

BenQ FP241W is First Display with HDMI Built-in
I am a sucker for a big, high resolution display and BenQ has a fantastic sounding new display they recently launched called the FP241W.
The most unique feature of the 24" BenQ FP241W is that is the first display on the market with an HDMI port built in supporting up to 1080i. Other features of the display are good too such as a 1000:1 contrast ratio, a 6ms gray-to-gray response time and a brightness of 500 CD/m2. The native resolution is 1920 x 1200. Read more

20GB Sony PS3 Gets HDMI and Lower Price
Sony starts to find its cool again and announces today at the TGS 2006 that the lower-end Sony Playstation 3 with 20GB HDD will have the HDMI port.
Sony argues that since the announcement at the E3 2005 the market for HDTVs accelerated faster than expected and that the market demands HDMI support - I agree, great move Sony!
Additionally Sony sets a lower price for the 20GB Sony PS3 in Japan with 49,980 Yen incl. tax (~$429). The original set price for the 20GB Playstation 3 in Japan was 62,790 Yen (~$539). This is a substancial price-cut of $110. Will be interesting how that PS3 price-cut will translate in the United States.

Most Sony PS3 Consoles at Launch will be 60GB/HDMI
Gamespot quotes an analyst from Lazard Capital Markets who just sat down with Sony, saying that 80% of the Sony PS3 consoles, which will be available at launch will be the premium model with 60GB and HDMI interface ($599).
I am glad Sony thinks that way. The 'low-end' version is just not that attractive. It is not the HDD size; it is the missing HDMI port.
I already wrote back in May when Sony announced the two versions of the PS3 that the 20GB model is just not cutting it.

No HDMI Cable Bundled with Sony PS3 60GB
A couple days ago the specification page on the Sony PS3 site (via PS3Land) revealed that the HDMI enabled 60GB Sony PS3 will not come with an HDMI cable. There is lots of criticsm about this circulating in the community.
In my case I already have an HDMI cable installed. It is 15m long. For anybody who has a HD ready projector the HDMI cable that Sony would have bundled would be anyway to short and useless.
Sure you could say you anyway pay a premium price for the new Playstation, why is Sony not throwing in a HDMI cable?

Pioneer DV-490V HDMI DVD Player Review
The review experts at Digital Trends review the slim-line Pioneer DV-490V DVD Player.
Quote:
"With HD DVD and Blu-Ray on the horizon, it’s no surprise that companies are starting to sell regular DVD players at all-time low prices. Case-in-point is the new Pioneer DV-490V DVD player which can be had for just under a 100 dollars. Now because this is Pioneer’s most entry-level DVD player, there are going to be some obvious compromises, which we will cover in this review.
Also keep in mind that because DVD technology has been around forever, there are a few treats that come with the DV-490V which you might not expect from a player in this price range."

Is HDCP Dead? PS3 Blu-ray and Xbox 360 HD DVD Without HDMI
The Microsoft Xbox 360 does not support HDMI and the cheaper version of the Sony PS3 also does not have a HDMI interface. Which means if HDCP is enforced on Blu-ray or HD DVD Discs you would only be able to watch the movie in DVD quality.
The Sony PS3 will be the cheapest Blu-ray disc player on the market for a while and potentially the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 will also be rather cheap (price will be possibly announced today). So most HD movie consumers will connect their HDTVs not via HDMI to watch next generation HD movies.
How will the movie industry react to this? Will they just shelf the resolution restriction on non-HDCP outputs? Or are they going to ignore this situation?

Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive Via USB and NO HDMI!
Microsoft published an article on xbox.com revealing some details about the talked about HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360.
We reported about an interview a couple days ago where a Microsoft manager hinted to a HDMI interface on the HD DVD drive.
The article on xbox.com says: "This new accessory will connect to the Xbox 360 console with a USB cable, enabling it to harness the power of the Xbox 360 console for the HD video outputs and digital surround sound. "
I read this as the HD DVD drive will have no HDMI interface. You only can connect your HDTV via the HD enabled component video output of the Xbox 360.
