I am a total fan of the BMW X6. It just looks awesome and in my opinion it is the most interesting car BMW offers these days. Of course I was intrigued when BMW announced a hybrid version of the BMW X6 SAV last year at the Detroit Auto Show 2008. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 will go on sale in Spring of 2010 and will be launched at the IAA 2009 this month.

I got a brochure of the BMW X6 Hybrid in my hands and the specifications are a bit of a headscratcher. Read more

Ford Unveils Intelligent Charge System for Plug-in Hybrids

The major automakers are all focusing on alternative fuel sources in the economic recession with the consumers demand for low cost vehicles that dare fuel-efficient. Ford has announced a new intelligent system for plug-in hybrid vehicles that allows the hybrid cars to communicate with the electric grid.

The charging tech allows the car owner to program when the car will charge and for how long it will charge. The system even lets the user choose the utility rate they will pay to charge the vehicle meaning the user can charge the car at off peak hours. Read more

Southern RobotX Hybrid RC Lawn Mower

Mowing my lawn is one of those tasks that I hate having to do each week thanks the sweltering Texas heat. It's no fun to get out there and mow when its 150-degrees (that's how hot it feels anyway). I think if I had a remote control lawn mower, I might be able to get some of the neighborhood kids to mow my lawn for free.

Universal Music and Gemalto Offer SIM Card DVD Music Hybrid

Gemalto and Universal Music have announced the introduction of a new music delivery format called the Smart Video Card. The card is a DVD-compliant optical disc embedded into the body of a regular SIM card.

The Smart Video Card can hold 120MB of content, which can be played in a standard DVD player and can include both video and audio content. The format allows the music to be listened to on a PC, mobile phone, or MP3 player. Read more

Watchmaker Ulysse Nardin and SCI Innovations have teamed up to create the world's first hybrid luxury smartphone called The Chairman. The phone is made from the finest metals and is hand assembled. The rear of the phone has an Ulysse Nardin winding rotor and a screw mounted pusher.

The winding rotor is integrated into the design of the phone and the winding action provides supplementary power to the phone. The rotor charges the built-in battery using kinetic energy. The smartphone is unlocked for use on most GSM networks worldwide. Read more

JVC calls the Everio GZ-X900 or Everio X a hybrid. Seems this term gets a bit over used in the camera world. Samsung announced yesterday the hybrid Samsung NX cameras, meaning something different with hybrid.

Live Luggage Announces New Hybrid PA Bag

Last summer we got our first look at the Live Luggage suitcase. The thing that made the luggage interesting was that the case had its own motor and battery to help users get around with a full suitcase with less effort. The company has announced a new bag that will be coming to stores soon that has many of the same features in a smaller bag.

The new suitcase is called the Hybrid PA Series Bag and is a soft ballistic nylon case with a removable laptop bag and weekend luggage bags. The design allows the entire bag to be checked or parts to be removed for carryon. The handle design places 85% of the bags weight over the wheels and the motor uses flat technology to assist the wheels on gradients, curbs, and steps. Read more

CES 2009: Husqvarna Automower Solar Hybrid tends the lawn without Fuel

The Husqvarna Automower Solar Hybrid is a fully robotic lawn mower partly powered by the sun and uses no fuel or oil. The company will exhibit this green grass cutting robot at the CES 2009.
The Solar Hybrid mower is designed to handle lawns of up to a half acre. Incorporating solar and battery power, it uses considerably less energy than any conventional mower with its large integrated solar panel and is emissions-free. When there is daylight available, the solar cells enable the mower to extend its cutting periods before requiring a recharge. Lower power consumption and an extended battery life enable a faster, more environmentally improved cut. Read more

MSI Wind U115 Hybrid Notebook Launches

I have been playing with an MSI Wind U110 for a few weeks now and I think it is a great little netbook, one of my favorites for sure. MSI has a new version of the Wind (actually two new models) that will be seen at CES 2009.

The more interesting of the two new versions is the U115 that uses a hybrid combination of a SSD for the OS and a HDD for storage. Both of the storage devices can be used simultaneously. The machine will use the new Intel Atom Z530 CPU running at 1.6GHz. The chipset is an Intel Poulsbo US15W. Read more

First hybrid Blu-ray DVD Disc (BD-DVD) hits Japanese Market

Japan gets the first hybrid Blu-ray DVD disc release in February with the Code Blue Box set. The three layer disc can be read by existing Blu-ray players and DVD players.
The Blu-ray player is using the blue laser with wave length of 405nm and the DVD player uses the 650nm red laser to read the disc without interference.
Currently the technology is limited to singly layer Blu-ray discs. Read more

Hybrid Solar Light Uses Battery Back Up

Most of us don’t put much thought into a flashlight until the power goes out or we need to go mucking about the attic in the dark. That's the point when we realize our flashlight has dead batteries, if we can even find it. The new Hybrid Light won't help you keep up with the flashlight, but you shouldn't have to worry about dead batteries.

The Hybrid Light provides 40 lumens of light and is waterproof up to 80 feet. The batteries house inside the light are rechargeable via solar panels integrated into the handle of the flashlight. The batteries promise to hold their change for a full three years. Read more

AFS Trinity Pulls Hybrid SUV from LA Auto Show

AFS Trinity Power Corporation announced that it has pulled its 150 MPG XH 150 electric hybrid SUV from the LA Auto Show. The company says that it will display its vehicle at an alternate location during the show. According to AFS, the decision to leave the show was due to the show trying to muzzle it on claims of the 150 MPG economy offered by its XH150 prototype.

The vehicle was displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit using graphics touting its claimed 150 MPG capabilities. According to AFS, the LA Auto Show refused to allow it to use the same graphics for advertising and only offered basement exhibition space for the car. The LA Auto Show says that manufacturers are only allowed to claim EPA verified fuel economy numbers. Read more

NVIDIA Powers New Hybrid Graphics Notebooks form Sony, Fujitsu, Siemens, and Ben

NVIDIA has announced that notebook makers Sony, Fujitsu, Siemens, and BenQ have new notebooks that utilize NVIDIA's Hybrid graphics. The notebooks are able to switch from discrete graphics cards to integrated graphics as power demands increase to save battery life.

NVIDIA says that all GeForce 9M Series GPUs support the feature. New notebooks with Hybrid graphics include the Sony VAIO Z series with discrete 9300M GS GPUs, Fujitsu Amilo XI 3650 with 9600M GT GPUs, and the BenQ Joybook S42 ultra-light laptop with 9600M GT GPUs. Read more

Hitachi Whips out Hybrid Blu-Ray Camcorder

Hitachi announced its latest Blu-Ray camcorder recently called the GZ-BD10HA. The Blu-Ray disc hybrid camcorder can record onto the next generation format HD Blu-Ray disc. The camera uses a newly developed seven megapixel CMOS image sensor to capture rich and vibrant video in full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. The camcorder can record up to four hours and 20 minutes full HD video or eight hours and 40 minutes of video at 1440 x 1080 resolution on a built-in 30 GB HDD.

In addition to the 30 GB HDD, the camera also features an SDHC card slot for added memory capacity for storing video and still shots. The camcorder has a dubbing function that allows the HD video to be transferred -- with the push of a button -- from either the HDD or the SDHC card to the camcorders internal Blu-Ray drive without the need of a computer. Dell Announces Inspiron 518 and Studio Hybrid PC

Dell is gearing up for back to school with the announcement of a pair of new computers that have interesting features. The Inspiron 518 looks cool with a glossy black case with chrome trim. The system has a media tray on top with a pair of USB ports for docking MP3 players. The starting price for the 518 is only $349.

Dell also introduced a new Inspiron 13 Laptop aimed at shoppers looking for a small, light, and efficient notebook. The 13 Laptop is glossy pacific blue with black trim and has a 13-inch display with capacitive touch media buttons. Other features include an 8-in-1 media card reader, slot load DVD drive and optional wireless networking, webcam, and Bluetooth. Dell introduces a new compact desktop PC line called Studio Hybrid.

The stylish Dell Studio Hybrids are about 80% smaller than a typical desktop, use about 70% less power than a typical desktop, and is Energy Star 4.0 compliant.
