AMD hives off Factories in bid to fight Intel
By David Lawsky
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices said on Tuesday it
will hive off its pricey manufacturing plants, get a cash injection and shrink
its debt to compete harder against bigger rival Intel for market share.
Two Abu Dahabi state-owned venture capital companies are backing the move. One
will put up at least $5.7 billion into the spun off factories and the other will
buy more than $300 million in AMD stock and warrants.

Intel Q9650 3.00GHz Quad Core Processor Review
TechwareLabs has published a review of the Intel Q9650 3.00GHz Quad Core Processor.
Quote from the review: "The Intel Q9650 is a processor that Intel is very proud of, and rightfully so. Reaching standard speeds of 3.0GHz per core, this processor is a force to reckon with. We put the Q9650 under a lot of strain as we ran several benchmarks and games to see how this processor really performed.

Intel X48 Motherboard Round-up: ASUS, ECS, Intel
Hothardware published a round-up of Intel X48 based motherboards.
Quote: "The first motherboard comes from ASUS, and is a member of the gamer-oriented Republic of Gamers series, which we have taken a few looks at in the past. We've been mostly impressed by what they've offered in this series, and expect no less with the Rampage Formula. Next up is the X48T-A from ECS. We can honestly say that we haven't seen much from ECS in the past couple of years in the enthusiast segment, so we aren't exactly sure what to expect, but if early impressions mean anything, this "Black Series" board means business. Finally, following on the heels of their popular Bonetrail X38 board, Intel has sent along the DX48BT2, which, like the X48 chipset itself is more or less an update of the original.

Gigabyte previews Intel Canmore DVP Platform at IDF
Gigabyte previewed the Intel Canmore DVP Platform at IDF 2008. PCStats has a report about the digital media player platform.
Quote: "As consumers we want digital access to our media, but at the same time we want big screen displays not to be undone by the noise of a computer. Intel thinks it may have a solution to this problem. Make a computer that is cheap and quiet, and specialized at media playback in high definition.

Intel CTO says Robots as smart as us by 2050
Intel's CTO Justin Rattner predicts in his keynote at the IDF 2008 that the Gap between Humans, Machines will close by 2050. Not so fast, many of us will still be around in 42 years and we sure will be checking on this prediction then.
Justin Rattner is predicting big changes in social interactions, robotics and improvements in computer's ability to sense the real world. I am still waiting for an affordable robot that is able to bloody roam my house and find my cat when I am away. I just have been to a BMW manufacturing plant and looking at the robots welding the parts together for a 3 series BMW. It is impressive, how flexible they are and their movements have a human touch. Still these robots are light years away from thinking for themselves.

Intelligent GPS Devices tap away Traffic
By Reed Stevenson
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Next time you're stuck in traffic on the way to an
unfamiliar destination, navigation device pointing the way, look around.
Chances are, there are other drivers just like you, staring back and forth
between the tail lights ahead and the little screen with a digital map
instructing you to stay on the road - a road often clogged with bumper-to-bumper
traffic.

Intel Atom versus VIA Nano Platform
Tweaktown published a comparison of the Intel Atom and the Via Nano platform.
Quote from the review: "While we concentrate on this sector, the focus is now moving towards the lower end of the spectrum. VIA has really cornered this market in the past when it came to ultra compact PCs; EPIA has been VIA’s biggest success and with the evolution of the VIA processors, each generation has gotten just that little bit more capable. Now Intel has seen just how popular this is, we finally have some competition in this sector.

VIA Nano L2100 versus Intel Atom 230
Hothardware compares two new contenders in the low power portable CPU arena. Via Nano takes on the Intel Atom CPU in this comparison.
Quote: "VIA caused quite a stir a few months ago when the company first revealed initial details regarding their low-power Nano processor. At the time, the product was referred to by its internal codename of Isaiah and the president of the design center that was tasked with making the processor was decidedly outspoken, which made for some exciting reporting. When news of the Isaiah core first broke, we hopped on the line with Glenn Henry, VIA's Centaur design center president, and got many questions answered regarding the processor's architecture, features, expected performance, and the company's plans for the CPU. We also covered the official announcement of the VIA Nano processor and detailed the exact models that would be available at launch. One thing we hadn't been able to do, however, was a direct performance comparison of the VIA Nano processor versus Intel's recently released Atom, which is target at the same market segment.
