Laser TV becomes new HDTV Entrant
You thought plasma, LCD, OLED, DLP and CRT were all the choices you had in HDTV? Think again, man. Mitsubishi is adding a new color to the palette, in the form of a high-def TV that uses laser technology. Expect to pay a large premium, though, as always, for the increase in picture quality and environmental friendliness.
Mitsubishi's LaserVue HDTV is slated for release fairly soon, well in time for the holiday season. The difference over other high-def sets is that it uses an engine powered by laser lights, instead of standard TV lighting technology. It sounds cool, as many new fangled ideas do, but expect to pay around $7,000 to get in on the new fad.

Laservue L65-A90 65 inch Laser TV officially priced
Mitsubishi revealed the pricing of the first Laservue TV L65-A90 to hit the market in the United States at the end of the third Quarter. The 65 inch Mitsubishi Laservue has an MSRP of $6,999.
The price is quite a bit more than you have to pay for a decent LCD or Plasma HDTV in the 65 inch size. The open question will be what price retailers actually will offer the Laservue 65 inch HDTV in store shelves.

Mitsubishi LaserVue Laser TV also comes in 73 inch Size in 2008
From time to time I check to see if Mitsubishi has updated the available information on their upcoming new Laser TV dubbed LaserVue.
We reported in April about the Mitsubishi Laser TV, when the LaserVue product brand was announced by Mitsubishi.
We knew that Mitsubishi was planning to offer a 65 inch Diamond LaserVue TV in the 3rd Quarter of 2008. In the FAQ section of the Mitsubishi Laser TV, the company also says they plan to release a 73 inch Diamond LaserVue TV in 2008.

Mitsubishi Laser TV - what we know so far
Somehow Laser TV crossed my mind this morning and I decided to hit the web to see if there are new details or publications by Mitsubishi since their announcement of the first Laser TV at the CES 2008 in January.
The last press information from Mitsubishi about the Laser TV got published along with new images of the 65" Laser TV prototype in Japan in Mid-February. The announcement is just a repeat of what has been announced at the CES 2008. It looks like Japan is not the first release target for the Mitsubishi Laser TV, the U.S. home theaters will have the honor of adopting a Laser TV first this fall. Mitsubishi also manufactures HDTVs in the North America.

Mitsubishi Laser TV Details announced
It happened. A new category of TV has been announced. Mitsubishi just published a press-release with the details of their large-screen Laser TV.
The long awaited Mitsubishi Laser TV delivers as much as twice the color of current high-definition televisions.
Today's HDTVs display less than 40% of the color spectrum that the eye can see. Now, for the first time ever, laser produces twice the color. Laser beams provide the widest range of rich, complex colors, along with the most clarity and depth of field.

Laser TV to debut at CES 2008
CES 2008 is around the corner and the anticipation for a debut of Laser TV technology is growing again. The odds look very good that Mitsubishi will finally introduce a Laser TV at the CES.
Update 01/08/08:
Laser TV official
Last Summer Mitsubishi said that they plan to show a Laser TV in 2008, after they missed the CES 2007. In December Greg Niven, EVP of marketing at Novalux, the company which makes a core technology component for Laser TVs, said that Laser-based rear-projection sets are close to commercialization and anticipated the first product introductions in 2008.

The CES 2008 is still over 6 month away, but we already have the first news about the largest consumer electronics show: Mitsubishi will show their Laser TV.
At the last CES SED and Laser TVs have been no shows. In an NY Times article rank DeMartin, vice president for marketing and product development at Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America said that Mitsubishi will show a large-screen laser TV. I am already all tingly.

Laser TV in Action
The hot new Laser TV technology that is supposed to be the next big thing has made an appearance on TV before Christmas. I totally missed it because of the holiday shopping craziness.
Laser company Coherent demonstrated a Laser TV prototype and the footage was shown on Kron 4 a San Francisco Bay Area TV channel.
Coherent was in the news just a couple days ago, because German based lighting giant Osram licensed Laser TV technology from Coherent.
We first reported about Laser TV, when Mitsubishi said they would bring a Laser TV to the market in 2007. Then in October, Arasor, a startup that is also based in the Silicon Valley showed a Laser TV prototype in Australia.
In the video about the Coherent Laser TV the say that commercial availability is to be expected in about 18 month. If there is not a big surprise, I think 2007 will pass and no Laser TV will be on the market. But maybe there is a big Laser TV splash at the CES 2007 that will make us believe again that Laser TV will be in shops this year.

Silicon Valley Start-up Arasor on the Forefront of Laser TV Technology
We reported the first time about the Laser TV technology in April 2006, when Mitsubishi announced their Laser TV developments.
A Silicon Valley based start-up called Arasor is also developing laser TV displays. Arasor demonstrated a Laser TV with full HD resolution in Australia apparently today. See the photo (source: The Daily Telegraph).
Arasor has Australian backers. This is the reason why the start-up got exposure down-under.
Arasor claims that Laser TVs will be 30% cheaper to manufacture than comparable sized Plasma or LCD TVs. Additionally Laser TV sets are about 1/3rd lighter than other flat panel TVs and use 25% less power.
The Laser TV technology offers 90% of the color gamut, which is dramatically more than Plasma or LCD displays can deliver.

Laser TV to debut at CES 2008
Instead of white-light mercury lamps a Laser TV uses a red, blue and green laser to generate images. The advantages are bright and deep images on large, thin, lightweight screens.
Apparently the first commercial Laser HDTV will go on sale in 2007.
Plasma and LCD technology are getting competition from new technology such as S.E.D. and Carbon Nanotube in the near future.
