Layar 2.0 AR Browser Finally Available For iPhone 3GS
Layar has now available for the iPhone 3GS, after it has been out on Android for a while. Layar is an open augmented reality browser. This means you can have all kinds of information provided by 3rd party developers augmented onto your reality.
I just installed the free Layar app on my iPhone 3GS and it is really a jaw-dropping experience. Even just looking out the window I can use Google local search and see marks where for instance my Pizza joints in the neighborhood are – I can’t wait to get outside to test more.

Brightkite Announces AR Layar
Layar was the first augmented reality application out there, and it looks like its just garnered its first big fan. Brightkite, also known as the “Social Discovery Network” just launched a layar for the Layar Reality Browser 2.0. This new layar adds a 'third dimension' to the AR application and lets users see what their friends and family are up to in real time.
Normally Brightkite lets users check up on their chums via a real-time media stream and a map view, similar to social applications like Facebook. This new layar application takes things to a different level, however, and allows users to look out through their smartphone camera and see digital info superimposed over the world. This information will show you where your friend was when he sent that message out about just eating the best burger ever. If your buddy texts you from the movies, you'll know which theater he was in. If your friend nearly gets sideswiped by a car, you'll know which intersection it happened on.

Layar Hands-On Video Out
The other day we brought you the video demo for Layar, an augmented reality app made by Netherlands-based SPRXmobile. Today Engadget has posted up a video interview with one of the designers of Layar.
The video is seriously impressive, and it gives us an idea of what we can expect when this hits in the U.S. Layar looks like a very useful tool for job searching. You can order a search of jobs meeting certain payment and distance parameters. Layar populates the live world map with little dots to represent the location of your search results. You can alter your search parameters to increase or decrease the number of hits you get. If you like the look of one of the jobs, you can select it to find more details or call the company.

Layar for Android: Augmented Reality is Here
Once again, we get proof of the awesomeness of Android. SPRXmobile, a Netherlands based mobile innovation company, has just released an application that gives us a glimpse of what the future will hold. This new app is called Layar, and it represents the very first word in augmented reality technology.
What is AR you ask? In short, it involves superimposing the digital world over the real one in order to bring you more information about your surroundings. The way the app works is somewhat difficult to explain but this video here does an elegant job of showing it.
