ATI Releases Catalyst 7.10 Drivers for Linux
AMD announced today that it has released new Linux drivers for its line of video cards. The new Linux Catalyst 7.10 drivers release includes several updates and new features.
The drivers now support AIGLX (accelerates indirect rendering) and ATI GPUs which allows for accelerated effects on desktops of supported distributions. OpenGL game performance improvements were added for OpenGL based games like Doom3 and Quake 4. Read more

Trolltech Qtopia Linux Greenphones sold out
Trolltech announces that they sold out of their Linux developer mobile phones and will not re-stock it. Trolltech introduced the Greenphone in August of 2006.
For Trolltech the mission of jump starting the open phone developer community with hardware has been accomplished. Trolltech will continue to support the Qtopia Greenphone community with new software releases in the coming months, but recommends the Neo 1973 from FIC as developer handsets.

Motorola Launches MOTOMAGIX Linux Development Platform
Motorola announced today that they are introducing MOTOMAGX, the next generation Linux platform from Motorola. To date Motorola has sold more than 9 million mobile Linux handsets around the world.
The first products that are based on MOTOMAGX are the MOTOROKR Z6 and the RAZR2 V8. The RAZR2 V8 is the first Linux device bound for us here in the United States.
The MOTOMAGIX platform enables several different types of content developed by third-party developers. The application supports Java ME applications and there are plans to introduce a new WebUI that would enable widgets and Web 2.0 content. Read more

TurboLinux announced Wizpy in November of 2006.

Ubuntu Linux on Dell confirmed?
Dell did not reveal officially which Linux distribution they are going to pre-install on their PC and Notebooks.
Boing Boing posted a reference to post on Fabian Rodriguez site saying that Dell went with Ubuntu. The site is down as it got digged (use DuggMirror). Mr. Rodriguez works for the Ubuntu support group. He writes that the embargo is over and that he now can talk about the Dell Ubuntu deal. An official press-release is supposedly on the way with the details.

Future of Palm contains Linux and Windows
Palm held a Analyst and Investor Day today in New York and told analysts, actually not that much, besides that the smartphone market is growing to $36 billion by 2009.
Question remains if Palm can grow with the market, despite the new entries into the smartphone market.
Palm did not comment on the rumors that Palm is up for sale. The company does not see Apple's upcoming iPhone a competitor in the business market.

Gupp Phreedom Linux Mobile Phone
Malaysian startup Gupp readies a Linux based smart phone with Wi-Fi and VOIP support dubbed Phreedom.
The Phreedom features a 2.5 inch QVGA color screen and a QWERTY keyboard similar to a Treo. Other features of the Linux phone include PXA270 CPU running at 312MHz, 320MB flash and SDRAM, 802.11b/g WiFi, GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz and 900/1800/1900 MHz.
The Linux version for the Phreedom comes from A La Mobile.
I suggest Gupp works a bit more on the design. The device looks a bit outdated and get rid of the external antenna thingy.

IBM Tutorial on Installing Linux on the Sony PS3
IBM has a wealth of great programming tutorials under there developerWorks program. Recently they published a tutorial on how to install Linux on the Sony PS3.
We already reported about how to install the Yellow Dog Linux distribution on the PS3 last year, but the fact that IBM tells you how to do it is interesting. IBM's Tutorial also tells about how to get started developing for the Cell BE processor on the PS3.

If you were one of the lucky ones that got your hands on the PS3 already and are looking to make it into a lean mean DVR machine Gizmodo has the how to for you. You will need to be sure that you have enough space on the internal HDD of your PS3 to begin.
Then Gizmodo says you will need a USB keyboard and mouse and their handy dandy how to that walks you through the rest of the steps. Once complete you can even use the PS3 as a web server. Read more
