MIT Develops Witty Robot Sidekick (For Your Car)

Topic:

MIT Develops Witty Robot Sidekick (For Your Car) Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Finally. Since I was a kid I've longed for a super-smart robot sidekick to be my best friend and come with me on my adventures. MIT's Affective Intelligent Driving Agent isn't quite that awesome, but it's a big step in the right direction. The AIDA is being built as a smart driving assistant that will make people safer and help them to find more efficient routes.

Essentially an adorable little robot that sits on your dashboard and talks to you, the AIDA is being built to recognize human facial expressions and emotional queues. Basically, they're creating a robot that knows to shut up and back off when you start to get angry at it. If some stupid dashboard droid started criticizing MY driving in the middle of agonizing gridlock traffic, I'd be sorely tempted to bludgeon it to death with my laptop bag.

Life Imitates Jetsons: The Cocoon Cooker

Topic:

Life Imitates Jetsons: The Cocoon Cooker Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

In the future, supposedly, we'll be able to store any number of delicious meals in the form of tiny, dehydrated pills. With a little water and heat, they'll pop into full sized gourmet meals, fit for the table of a king!

Okay, so that's probably just a ridiculous sci-fi nerd dream. But, according to the Daily Mail (via Gizmodo) we're closer than ever thanks to Electrolux. They're working on a project called the "Cocoon Cooker" which would be able to 'grow' meat and fish by heating up animal cells to 'clone' larger quantities of real meat. You'd start with a small, dehydrated chunk of the product, stick it in the cooker, and find yourself with a fresh slab of salmon, beef or, chicken.

MIT Heals The Blind

Topic:

MIT Heals The Blind Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Let's forget about consumer gadgets for a minute. Netbooks and RAmos Android MIDs and smartphones and gaming consoles are awesome, but every new release in the last year pales in comparison to what MIT has just cooked up. WIRED reports that a team of researchers at the institute have created a microchip that, when properly installed in the eye, will allow the blind to see.

Patients will recieve a microchip implant, and also be asked to wear a pair of glasses with a tiny camera attached to them. The camera sends images to the microchip in the eyeball which transmits them to the brain. This invention won't fully restore normal vision, but it will allow a blind person enough sight to navigate a room, recognize faces, and engage in other normal social tasks.

His answers give us an idea of where MIT hopes to take bokodes in the near future, and the impact this new technology could have upon our daily lives.

Mitsubishi Laser TV drops in Price for the first Time

Topic:

Mitsubishi Laser TV drops in Price for the first Time Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review I am not sure what is going on with the Mitsubishi Laser TV LaserVue. Somehow it got rather quiet despite some recent manufacturing woes around the Laser TV technology. In the meantime Samsung hammers LED TV Technology into our heads and we are almost forgetting the cool Laser TV technology. Afterall Laser TVs give us twice the color, are energy efficient, 3D ready and can be housed in a thin canvas.

I was monitoring the prices on Amazon for the Mitsubishi L65A90 65-Inch LaserVue HDTV and now Amazon is selling it for $6,499 instead of the $6,999 price the unit has had since introduction last November.

MetroPCS: Unlimited International Calls, $5

Topic:

MetroPCS: Unlimited International Calls, $5 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

MetroPCS just dropped one hell of a bomb on the mobile carrier market. If you're in an area covered by MetroPCS you're now eligible to get unlimited international calls to over 100 countries for just $5 a month.

I'd compare this to some other long-distance plan, but quite frankly no one else's plan compares. Five bucks a month for unlimited calls to (pretty much) anywhere in the world is a deal of singular excellence. To take advantage of this service you'll have to be on one of MetroPCS's service plans. That's not really much of a caveat, considering they don't require a contract and give you your first month of service free.
