Michael Jackson's Memorial Overloads The Internet

Alright, that title was a little sensational. But only a little. The King of Pop was mourned yesterday at a ceremony that was more widely viewed than the memorial services of any real king who has ever lived. Gigaom reports that Akamai delivered over 2,185,000 live/on-demand streams today, and that total traffic on their network exceeded 2 terabites per second during the service itself.

At the peak today, news sites received close to four million viewers per minute, and an average of 3.3 million visitors per minute over the course of the day. It's clear now that both Michael's death, and his memorial, have been among the most significant events in the history of the Internet so far. Despite that, most sites didn't notice a significant slowdown in their loading speeds. Lag was most pronounced for people overseas who attempted to stream the event.

Michael Jackson most likely will make history today again. The Michael Jackson Memorial service will most likely be the biggest live video event in the Internet history.
Besides TV channels around the globe, several sites will offer live webcast of the Michael Jackson Memorial service at the Staplescenter in Los Angeles.
It is still pretty unclear what will happen during the memorial service and which stars will pay tribute to Jackson. What has been confirmed is that the body of Michael Jackson will be indeed present at the StaplesCenter. Stevie Wonder, Usher, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson are supposed to perform. Read more

Michael Jackson's Death takes down News Web Sites [Update]

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, died very unexpected yesterday and as the sad news spreads around the globe News web sites could not handle the traffic according to Keynote Systems.
Shawn White, Keynote's director of external operations said, "Beginning at 5:30pm (EDT), the average speed for downloading news sites doubled from less than four seconds to almost nine seconds. During the same period, the average availability of sites on the index dropped from almost 100% to 86%. The index returned to normal by 9:15pm (EDT)." Read more
