VIA's Nano 3000 Provides an Atom Rival

For the last year and change, Intel's Atom processors have basically been the first and last word in ultraportable CPUs. Today, VIA changes that with the launch of their new Nano 3000 series of processors (via Engadget). The Atom line is looking quite aged these days, but these six new Nano 3000 chips look much spiffier. Plus, they have a cool futuristic name. Nano 3000 sounds way cooler than Atom.

These CPUs run from 1 to 2 GHz in speed and each one packs an 800 MHz FSB, in addition to 64 bit support and Windows 7/Linux compatibility. The power ratings of this new line all measure in at about 20% more efficient than previous generation Nanos, and they also promise to have 1080p multimedia playback. Sign me the hell up for a netbook that packs one of these little darlings.

IBM Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Nanotech milestone

IBM has announced that it is now celebrating the 20th anniversary of an important breakthrough in nanotechnology research. Today marks 20 years since IBM Fellow Don Eigler became the first person to ever move and control a single atom.

Eigler and his team built a custom microscope and used it to spell out IBM with 35 xenon atoms. This was the first time that anyone had successfully moved individual atoms with accuracy. The scanning tunneling microscope was used to visualize and experiment with molecules and atoms. Read more

If you want to know where the video camera in the new iPod nano 5G is and how it looks like then check out the teardown of the nano 5G on iFixit. The iPod nano 5G went on sale on September 9th and is one of the smallest video cameras you can find.

The video camera module inside the new iPod nano is only 3mm thin. The iPod itself is itself only 6.2mm thin. Read more

Cygnett Announces iPod Touch G3/Nano G5 Early

The big Apple event is due later today, but it looks like a third-party accessory maker may have jumped the gun on two major announcements. According to Cnet Cygnett has released pictures of their new iPod cases actually on the iPod touch G3 and nano G5.

From where I'm sitting, the photos look pretty real. Cnet concurs. Somehow, Cygnett screwed up and updated their website a smidge too early. This could be very bad news for them if Apple decides to take this personally. Steve Jobs really, really doesn't like leaks, even leaks that come out barely ahead of the official announcement.

Belkin seems to always be whipping out new accessories for the iPhone or iPod. Today the company is showing off new cases for the iPod nano 4G MP3 player. Among the cases are the new Micra and Fuse cases. The Micra cases are clear with subtle graphics for detail.

The clear design of the case allows the user to show off and see the color of their nano but adds a graphic to the clear case with a representation of a sound wave. InnoDisk Brings 128GB nanoSSD to Computex

Data storage takes another step forward today with newcomer InnoDisk's latest offering to the Computex convention. Last year InnoDisk brought out a 2.5 inch 128GB SATA 10000 SSD card. Now they've outdone themselves with the unbelievably tiny 128 GB nanoSSD card. As you can see from the picture, it's drastically tinier than its predecessors while maintaining the same data storage capacity.

Looking at their SSD evolution display is like watching technology move forward right before your eyes. It's a little bit mind-boggling how fast things are moving these days. It won't be too long before you'll be seeing an even smaller version of this card in stores, ready to be stuck into all manner of netbooks, mobile phones, and cameras.

Palm Mini-Pre rumored to go against rumored iPhone nano

That is maybe something new a rumored devices goes against another rumored one. TechCrunch reports that one of their sources told them about a new Palm smartphone that would be released in fall.
Update: Rumor intensived very quickly and now we look at an ultra-thin Palm Eos.

The new Palm Pre like device would be smaller, but still run webOS. A smaller iPhone was also already rumored before the first iPhone actually started to ship. The iPhone nano is after two years still a far fetch rumor.
If the Palm Mini-Pre will have the same fate remains to be seen. Read more

New iPhone 2009 going Pro is more exciting than going Nano

I like small phones that fit into the palm of my hand, because I can carry them in all my pants in the front pockets. When the first iPhone nano rumors appeared back in 2007 I got very excited about a small version of the iPhone with all the features the standard iPhone or later iPhone 3G would offer. The only difference would be the smaller screen.
Now in the anticipation of the new iPhone 2009 that we all expect to arrive in June all rumors point towards a more powerful iPhone that some call iPhone Pro. The focus of the new iPhone 2009 is mostly predicted to be around performance in processing and also possibly in 3D rendering for games. Read more

Tata Nano goes on Sale in India for about $2,000

A little over a year ago Indian Tata Motors made a huge splash with the announcement of the Tata Nano, a car selling for about $2,000 (100,000 rupees) now in India.
The Tata Nano is BS-III compliant and comes with an all-new 2-cylinder aluminum MPFI 624 cc petrol engine mated to a four-speed gear box and will be available in three variants.
The three Nano models include the Tata Nano Standard, Tata Nano CX and Tata Nano LX. Read more

Samsung NC20 VIA Nano Netbook is Official

The fact that the Samsung NC20 netbook is not based on the Intel Atom CPU was already leaked a month ago from a Russian site that reviewed the NC20. Today VIA announced officially that the new Samsung NC20 netbook is based on the Atom competitor VIA Nano CPU.
The NC20 pushes the size limits of netbooks to a 12.1 inch screen with 1280x800px resolution.
Other features of the NC20 include 1.3+GHz VIA Nano processor with the highly-integrated VIA VX800 system media processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, 6.5h battery life, card reader, 3 USB ports and 1.3MP camera. Read more

NVIDIA ION 2 supports VIA Nano CPU

NVIDIA apparently has more plans with the ION platform than just supporting Intel Atom CPUs. Digitimes reports that NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang confirmed that NVIDIA will release ION 2 supporting the VIA Nano CPU later in 2009.
The announcements around the NVIDIA ION platform increase, but the real products are not here yet. Apparently in June we will see the first ION based Nettop and mini-notebooks priced at $299. Read more

I could get $15 from Apple for my scratched iPod nano 1G

Apple has lost a class action law suit regarding the easy scratching of the first generation iPod nano from 2005. Apple has been ordered to pay $22.5 million to cover for the endured pain. I still have one and would get $15 from Apple if I file a claim on the class action lawsuit site - Yippie!

Apple says no to an iPhone nano

Apple's Tim Cook denied plans for a smaller iPhone dubbed in the Apple rumor world as iPhone nano.
Apple's COO Tim Cook who currently runs Apple until Steve Jobs is back got it though very wrong on what an iPhone nano smartphone is.
According to Apple Insider, when asked about an iPhone nano he replied "We're not going to play in the low-end voice phone business". That is not what I think an iPhone nano should be. I want a full iPhone 3G that is just a little smaller sporting an 2.2-2.6 inch OLED with QVGA resolution. Read more

Vaja Announces iPhone Nano Cases

The iPhone Nano has been a topic of much discussion recently with many rumors popping up that Apple may have a new, smaller device up its sleeve for the smartphone crowd. Apple products have been leaked ahead of launch before from case makers, which was the case with some of the new iPods and the iPhone.
