Two New iPhone AR Apps Hit

Topic:

Two New iPhone AR Apps Hit Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Augmented reality is probably the hottest current trend in the app world. AR is the natural expansion of smartphone technology. It isn't enough that we be able to connect to the Internet whenever we wish. We want the ability to tap into the vast information reserves of the net in order to keep ourselves informed of whatever is going on around us. AR gives us that, through the lens of a smartphone camera.

Two new AR apps (ReadWriteWeb) have hit the iPhone within the last few days. Cyclopedia, a pure Wikipedia-based AR app, and Wikitude, which was first available for Android smartphones. Cyclopedia uses the iPhone's internal compass to layer Wiki information over noteworthy sites in the area. It costs $2 and has a great UI. Cyclopedia's one failing is that it only dredges content from Wikipedia.

Apple Looks At New iPhone Features

Topic:

Apple Looks At New iPhone Features Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Innovation is king in the smartphone industry. Anyone who wants to stay on top has to continuously shake things up. The iPhone 3GS was a big success, but if Apple wants to beat RIM they're going to need to bring more to the table. One of the big criticisms a lot of folks have with the iPhone is that its screen does not offer any tactile feedback. There's a patent application out for an iPhone screen that features haptic feedback technology.

This haptic screen consists of a bunch of piezoelectronic actuators that all emit different frequencies, which lets the developers program them to mimic the feel of different surfaces. Supposedly, this would let Apple simulate a trackball on the screen that feels so real you can find it without looking.

Apple standardizes Naming of new iPhone to iPhone 3GS

Topic:

Apple standardizes Naming of new iPhone to iPhone 3GS Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Apple has written the name of the new iPhone with a space between 3G and S in the Apple store and on slides. The press-release that announced that Apple sold 1 million iPhone 3GS in the first weekend had no space between 3G and S and just called it iPhone 3GS. I complained in my coverage about this inconsistency.

Now Apple has apparently adopted this naming convention consistently as the company has changed the naming of the new iPhone in the Apple Store to iPhone 3GS as well. Read more

Where Have All The Rumored New iPhones Gone?

Topic:

Where Have All The Rumored New iPhones Gone? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

In the dingy haze of the post-iPhone release hangover it's easy to forget about all of the wild and varied rumors that hit in the months leading up to its launch. But what did happen to all the talk about multiple iPhone models coming in the near future? Apple executives and industry analysts alike have confirmed their desire to segment the market with different versions of their trademark phone. So why haven't we seen any yet?

I think the answer is very simple. Apple has already begun to segment. The iPhone 3G and 3GS are both viable smartphones, but one is a budget option while the other is a much more high-end piece of equipment. And those two are just the beginning. I think that there is a reason that Apple put the 3GS on sale exactly a year after the launch of the 3G. They were establishing a pattern.

New iPhone 3GS Owners: Activation Could Take 2 Days.

New iPhone 3GS Owners: Activation Could Take 2 Days. Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

There's one problem with having a ridiculously successful product that sells hundreds of thousands of pre-orders before it even comes out in stores. That problem is never being quite ready for the sheer deluge of people trying to use your product. At least, we're assuming this is a problem endemic to successful products like the iPhone. Last year's 3G launch was plagued with breaking networks and phones that wouldn't work out-of-the-box due to AT&T server issues, and the same thing is happening again this year.

Reports are coming in from all over, all claiming the same issue. Customers are finding themselves unable to activate their new iPhones immediately due to the massive deluge of new 3GS owners. Warning messages on iTunes inform users that, due to request volume, their activation may take up to 48 hours to go through.

Matte Black Case of New iPhone 2009 Leak Confirmed Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Okay, so maybe we spoke too soon. Back before the 3GS was released a picture of a matte black iPhone case got leaked out to the world. After the unveiling of the new iPhone on Monday, we all just assumed the leaked photos had been a hoax of some sort.

Apparently we were wrong. The FCC released a list of ID numbers for new cell phones. The iPhone 3GS was on there, and its model number and ID matched with the numbers on leaked backside image. It now appears that the leaked photos were real pictures of an iPhone 3GS, although obviously not of the version we saw on Monday.

New iPhone OS 3.0 available June 17th

Topic:

New iPhone OS 3.0 available June 17th Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

It was just announced at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference that the much-awaited iPhone OS 3.0 update will be out everywhere on June 17th. iPhone users will receive the update for free, and touch owners will have to shell out $9.95 for the latest version of the OS.

OS 3.0 has a number of cool new features that Apple fans have been waiting for. For one thing, tethering support is included in the new update. While AT&T is very much against allowing users to tether their iPhone to a notebook, future non-ATT carriers of the iPhone 3GS could be able to take advantage of this. OS 3.0 also contains app-sharing and in-call digital sharing (no mention of video-conferencing though).

New iPhone Wishlist

Topic:

New iPhone Wishlist Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review We are only two hours away from Apple kicking off the WWDC 09 Keynote in San Francisco.
Over the last couple of months it has been a wild ride of rumors about the new iPhone. It is time to take a look at what the new iPhone 2009 will ideally be about taking the rumors we have reported on into consideration.
Faster, longer, higher are three adjectives that should be applying to the new iPhone.
A faster processor along with more RAM should take full advantage of the new iPhone 3.0 OS and make the iPhone experience as snappy as possible. HSDPA on the connectivity side should make surfing and downloading faster.

A longer battery life possibly enabled through the use of an OLED screen instead of the power hungry LCD.

AT&T iPhone 3G Page down, working on new iPhone 2009? [Update]

Topic:

AT&T iPhone 3G Page down, working on new iPhone 2009? [Update] Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review It is the weekend before the highly anticipated Apple WWDC 2009 keynote will take place and we all expect to see a new iPhone.
My update scanner just notified me about a change on the AT&T iPhone page. Well, it is gone. When you click on the iPhone feature on the AT&T homepage you get to a Site Map Page. What does this mean?
Is AT&T not taking orders for the current iPhone 3G anymore? Are they reworking the pages for the new iPhone? Is this just a fluke and the iPhone page will be back in 5min? (The time right now is 13:34 EST). Update: AT&T iPhone page is back online. Cannot see a difference. Read more
