The Nikon D5000 DSLR unveiled last week is now available for preorder from Amazon and other camera retailers.

Amazon currently lists D5000 for $849.95 including the 18-55mm VR lens, while B&H is offering just the camera body for $729.95.

Gizmodo cites an anonymous tipster in reporting that it will be available at brick and mortar retailers on Friday, April 24th.

DPReview describes the Nikon D5000 as an “upper-entry-level DSLR” sitting somewhere between the D40 and D60 models, but a notch below the high-end D90.

Nikon D5000 Hands-On first Impressions Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Nikon launched the Nikon D5000 DSLR camera today.
PhotographyBlog got some hands-on time with the D5000 at the UK launch event. They could not shoot any photos with the D5000 as it was still a pre-production model.
They have published 22 photos of the D5000 though. Their initial take is rather positive. The D5000 handles like the D90. The missing auto focus in the video mode is still an issue that prevents this DSLR from being a real video camera. Read more

Nikon D5000 DSLR unveiled Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Nikon introduced the new Nikon D5000 DSLR camera today. The Nikon D5000 is the newest addition to its family of DX-format digital SLRs.
The Nikon D5000 features a versatile Vari-angle 2.7 inch LCD monitor that can be viewed in normal position flush against the camera back, or swung out and rotated and/or tilted.

Other features of the Nikon D5000 include 12.3MP, EXPEED image processing system, Live View shooting, D-Movie video capture with up to 1,280x720px HD videos, 19 Scene Modes, Scene Recognition System with Face Detection System, Active D-Lighting, 11-point AF system with Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module, and Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System.
