Notebooks have a hard time this Holiday shopping season competing with the sexy netbooks. What we will see and are already seeing is deep price cuts that will most likely reach the deepest levels next week on Black Friday.

HP TouchSmart tx2 Notebook revealed
HP unveiled today the HP TouchSmart tx2 Notebook. A HP TouchSmart notebook was already rumored in October. HP extends its touch-screen technology and user interface known from their TouchSmart All-in-One PCs to a convertible notebook dubbed TouchSmart tx2.
The HP TouchSmart tx2 features include a multi-touch enabled 12.1-inch diagonal BrightView LED display and AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core or AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core CPU options. Further customization options are still in the dark as the ordering pages are not live yet.

Hitachi Ships Green 500GB Notebook HDD
Hitachi announced today new notebook hard drives that offer high capacity, encryption, and green power features. The 500GB Travelstar 5K500.B uses dual 250GB platters in a standard 9.5mm form factor. The drive has optional Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) for sensitive data.
The drive has the Hitachi EcoTrac classification due to the reduced wattage required to operate the drive, along with its halogen free design. The drive requires only 1.4W during read/write applications. Spin speed for the drive is 5400 RPM. An enhanced availability version of the drive will be offered called the E5K500.B. The normal drive will ship in December with the E5K500.B shipping by the end of Q1 2009. Read more

Sony recalls 100,000 Notebook Batteries
Here we go again. New notebook battery recalls have been announced by Sony affecting notebook makers HP, Toshiba, and a very small number of Dell notebooks. The recall for Sony battery packs amounts to 100,000 affected notebooks world-wide. The number of affected notebooks is far less than the battery recall nightmare of 2006 where vendors recalled millions of batteries.
Affected PC manufacturers have collectively reported 40 incidents globally of overheating associated with these recalls -- some of which included smoke and/or flames. Sony was informed that four incidents involved small burns and 21 included minor property damage. Reportedly, 19 of these overheating incidents occurred in the U.S.

Toshiba has released the new X305-Q708 laptop featuring a 17-inch LCD and the latest technology from NVIDIA and Intel. The machine features an Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor and NVIDIA SLI technology.

Windows 7 to push Touch Screen Notebooks
Windows 7 is said to support Multi-touch features. Digitimes reports that the notebook industry would be jumping on these capabilities and bring touchscreen notebooks to the mainstream market.
Notebook concepts featuring two touchscreens and no physical keyboards are in the works. We already reported in 2007 about the Estari 2-VU laptop featuring two touchscreens.

HP TouchSmart Notebook rumored
HP is making a line of All-in-One Desktop PCs with a touch-screen dubbed Touchsmart. The WSJ reports now that HP is planning to release a touch-screen laptop still this year.
Update: HP TouchSmart tx2 Notebook unveiled
There are no further details about the HP TouchSmart notebook available in the report.
The Asus Eee netbooks have been rumored to be getting touch-screens for the longest time now as well.

Toshiba Announces New Notebooks
Toshiba has announced several new notebook computers today. The first is a new 3-pound ultraportable for $1399 that is only 1.18-inches thick and offers 7.5 hours of battery life. The machine uses Intel Centrino 2 technology. The machine is called the Portege A600 and features a LED backlit display.
Toshiba also launched the Tecra R10 retailing for $1549 with a total weight of 4.4 pounds. The R10 features NVIDIA Quadro graphics and Centrino 2 technology. The Portege R600 is a tiny ultraportable system weighing 2.4 pounds and only 0.77-inches thick. The R600 starts at $2099 has available SSD storage and LED backlit display. Read more
