Kodak signs OLED Cross-License Agreement With LG Display

Eastman Kodak Company, a pioneer in organic light emitting diode technology (OLED), today announced an intellectual property cross-licensing agreement with LG Display Co., Ltd., of Korea.

The license, which is royalty bearing to Kodak, enables LG Display to use Kodak technology, including yield-improving capabilities for Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) modules, in a variety of small to medium size display applications such as mobile phones, portable media players, picture frames, and small TVs. The agreement also enables LG Display to purchase Kodak's patented OLED materials for use in manufacturing displays. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Read more

Optimus Maximus OLED Keyboard ships

In 2005 Russian design studio Artlebedev sparked huge interest for their OLED PC keyboard design. Three years later the OLED keyboard is shipping to the first customers who ordered in 2007.

Sony OLED TV XEL-1 at CES 2008

Sony announces the availability of the 11 inch OLED TV XEL-1 in the United States at the CES 2008.

The 11-inch (measured diagonally) XEL-1 model is just about 3 millimeters thin and offers picture quality with extremely high contrast, outstanding brightness, exceptional color reproduction, and a rapid response time.
We have been at the Sony CES conference and took a couple photos of the future of television that is currently only 11 inch in size, but Sony also shows a 27 inch OLED TV at the CES 2008. Read more

The exhibited items look actually pretty unprofessional. The use of these OLED displays is just not thought through. There are displays sewed into a tie, a bag, a hat, and a shirt. Read more

The stunning XEL-1 is what Sony teased on their site in Japan Friday. The XEL-1 is an 11 inch display that is only 3mm thin.
Other stunning performance indicators include a dramatic 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a low 45W power consumption.

World's Thinnest AMOLED Display by Samsung

Samsung SDI shows a 2.2 inch AMOLED display which is only .52mm thin.

AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. 0.52mm is about as thin as a business card. Pretty cool - nearly as cool as the new Sony flexible OLED display.

The ultra-thin 2.2 inch AMOLED display has a QVGA resolution and seems to be very bright. Samsung SDI also showed other AMOLED displays with different resolutions like 400x240px at the SID 2007. Read more

We reported about Sony showing off a cool flexible OLED display at the SID 2007 last week. Now a video appeared from a Japanese TV broadcast demonstrating the Sony OLED display.

The flexible display has a size of 2.5 inch featuring a resolution of 120×RGB×160 pixel.
Other specifications of the flexible OLED display include 100 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 0.3mm thickness of the panel.

This is apparently the world's first full color OLED/organic TFT on a flexible substrate. Sony managed to create a flexible display with a size of 2.5 inch featuring a resolution of 120×RGB×160 pixel.

MicroEmissive Displays’ eyescreen products are the world’s only polymer organic light emitting diode (P-OLED) microdisplays.

The eyescreen ME3204 is a color P-OLED QVGA (320 x RGB x 240) microdisplay featuring 230K dots in a compact 6 mm (0.24”) diagonal pixel array. It is mounted on a flex assembly to enable simplified design-in to end products.
The eyescreen ME3204 has a two-wire serial interface, BT.656 and 8-bit serial RBG digital inputs, and runs off a single 2.5 V supply. Read more

The Pantech IM-R200 is dual-LCD sliding phone equipped with an OLED touch-sensitive screen.

The innovative OLED touch-screen keyboard reminds me on the much hyped Optimus OLED Keyboard. Pantech designed the virtual touch keypad with capacitive sensor technology. Sony, Toshiba and Matsushita Commercializing OLED TVs

Sony plans to manufacture 1,000 11 inch OLED display per month starting this year. A joint venture between Toshiba and Matsushita said today that they will start selling OLED based TVs in 3 years.

So Sony seems to be ahead of the OLED TV game. But what are we supposed todo with an 11 inch TV? Hold it very close to our eyes to see the HD content? After all Sony is HD and HD is Sony. Sony actually thinks that these small OLED displays find use in advertising or information assistance.
