OLPC XO Laptop Will Be An eBook Computer By 2012
There is some information about the OLPC project of Nicholas Negroponte. Apparently the 2nd generation OLPC XO laptop will only be a hardware upgrade of the current model and OLPC focuses on a completely new design for the 3rd generation which is supposed to hit the market in 2012.
Negroponte is quoted in an article on Xconomy as saying that the XO 3.0 is a single sheet, completely plastic and unbreakable, waterproof, 1/4" thick, full color, reflective and transmissive, no bezel, no holes. 1W and a price of $75.

OLPC Announces Via chipsets for XO Update
The OLPC has been working hard to get its cheap notebooks into the hands of kids around the world to help with education in third world countries. The company is always on the lookout for ways to improve the XO notebook and make it more profitable.
Last week OLPC announced that in the upcoming version 1.5 of the XO notebook it will be switching from the AMD chipset currently used in the machines to a Via chipset that uses a C7-M processor. The RAM will also get increased to 1GB. Read more

OLPC Give 1, Get 1 XO Laptop launches Today, See what good you can do
The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization is launching their Give 1, Get 1 campaign again this Holiday season. This year the XO laptop is not only available in the US, but also in Europe.
Laptop Magazine has an interesting report published that documents their donation of 30 XO Laptops to a village in Mali last year.
You can do the same good thing starting today by buying a XO Laptop on Amazon.com for $399, where you actually donate with the purchase one XO Laptop to a child in need.

OLPC XO-2
OLPC is working on the next generation kids notebook dubbed XO-2 and gave a first glimps on what the XO-2 is supposed to look like.
The new future XO will have two touch screens and will be much smaller than the current XO notebook. The XO-2 will employ the dual indoor-and-sunlight displays. The keyboards and user interface elements will be adjustable to the age and skills of the kids using them.
It looks like a bit of what a future Nintendo DS could look like.

OLPC Gets New President and COO
The One Laptop per Child foundation announced today that it has appointed a new COO. Charles Kane was appointed COO and President by founder and Chairman Nicholas Negroponte. The OLPC has had a rough time of late with key players in the foundation leaving to start their own companies.
The OLPC was founded with the goal of creating a $100 laptop that would enable children in third world countries to get a better education. Peru placed one of the first orders for the laptops, which wound up costing in the area of $188 per unit rather than the $100 first talked about. Read more

OLPC XO Laptop enters Mass Production
The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) XO laptop is entering mass production stage at Quanta Computer.
The first shipments are expected already this month.
If you purchased a XO in the Give 1 Get 1 offer you should expect yours to ship in December.

OLPC Association Announces 100,000 XO Order from Uruguay
The OLPC association announced today that it won the bidding to provide 100,000 XO laptops to Uruguay. The contract calls for up to 400,000 XP laptops. Interestingly, the OLPC announced not long ago that production was delayed on the XO notebook, leading many to wonder if the XO would be available in time to fill orders.
OLPC announced a program for the holidays where buyers in the U.S. can purchase a XO laptop for themselves and give one to a child in another country for $399. The XO laptops are expected to be available on November 12 with the Give 1 Get 1 sale lasting only two weeks. Read more

Laptop Magazine got a chance to get some first hand impressions of the latest version of the One Laptop Per Child's XO Laptop.

OLPC XO Laptop goes into Mass Production
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) announces that the XO laptop goes into mass production.
The rollout of the first XO laptops based on the release of the final Beta-4 (B4) engineering model is scheduled for October.
The XO Laptop B4 machines feature the AMD Geode LX processor, improved keyboard and touch pad, many electrical and mechanical enhancements, and an individualized brightly colored XO logo on the back. Children will be able to select from a wide range of colors for the logo so they can readily identify their laptop in a crowded classroom.

OLPC says it has no Windows Plans
Last week we posted a story that the kids laptop from OLPC will run Windows. A week later OLPC says that there are actually no Windows plans in place.
Microsoft is one of the 1,500 accepted developers in the OLPC developer program. It would be up to them at the moment to make Windows run on the XO laptop.

OLPC to cost $175 and can run Windows
The $100 Laptop is going to cost $175, but the hardware will be able to run Microsoft Windows.
Nicholas Negroponte, the former director of the MIT Media Lab, who now runs the nonprofit One Laptop Per Child project revealed these updates this week.

OLPC XO B2 Produced and Quanta Ups Target to 10 Million
You cannot call the OLPC XO Laptop $100 laptop anymore, but the ultra-lowcost Laptop for kids in third world countries makes progress.
Hardware manufacturer Quanta Computer produced the 2nd pre-production OLPC XO B2.
Heise reports that the current production cost of the OLPC are $140. Which is close enough I would say.
