Palm cancels Foleo
Palm canceled the smartphone companion Foleo just before it shipped.
Palm announced the Foleo on May 30th. I already wrote a piece the next day that Foleo is a boring product. Back then the highly anticipated and low-cost Asus EEE had not even been announced.
Palm says on its corporate blog that the company is now focusing on their next generation platform and the first smartphones that will bring this platform to market.

Hands-On with the Palm Foleo
Krunker got their hands on the new Palm Foleo smartphone companion at a Palm retail store at the Grove in Los Angeles.
Quote from the hands-on Foleo report: "I’ll reserve my final judgement on the Foleo when it comes out at the end of the summer. Until then, I think there is a market for the Foleo - I just don’t think it’s as large as Palm hopes it would be. If Palm would provide more functionality than just email and web browsing to the Foleo, then I would be far more positive (and hopeful) of the device.

Palm Foleo is not Sexy, HTC Shift and FlyBook V5 are
Yesterday Palm introduced the Foleo Smartphone companion. It is a 10 inch simplified notebook with full QWERTY keyboard running on Linux.
Palm bets on the simplicity with the Foleo and added important things like instant on to the device. The price is $599. In the beginning you get a $100 rebate bringing the price down to $499.
Foleo has wi-fi, which makes it also a web pad like the Nokia N800.
I think the major problem with the Foleo is that it is not sexy and not cool. The Foleo will find its customers, who like Palm or appreciate the no frills design.

Palm UMPC ''Hawk''
Here we have another interesting and still very, very vague future product: A Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) coming from Palm. The community gave it the codename "Hawk" to pay tribute to Jeff Hawkins, one of Palm's founders.
That Palm would create a new device that is not a phone and not a PDA is a topic since years.
First more focused rumors of the Palm Hawk sprung up in March on the Palm Forums. Brighthand (via Gizmodo) reiterated the rumor yesterday with some predictions what the Hawk is supposed to be.

Palm Treo 755p Review
Laptop Mag reviews the new Palm Treo 755p. The smartphone is slimmer, but still runs same old Palm OS.
Quote from the review:
"Those hoping for a breakthrough in design or software should look elsewhere or wait to see what Palm has coming next. However, the Treo 755p offers a lot of functionality without a steep learning curve and it's a little less bulky than previous models.

Future of Palm contains Linux and Windows
Palm held a Analyst and Investor Day today in New York and told analysts, actually not that much, besides that the smartphone market is growing to $36 billion by 2009.
Question remains if Palm can grow with the market, despite the new entries into the smartphone market.
Palm did not comment on the rumors that Palm is up for sale. The company does not see Apple's upcoming iPhone a competitor in the business market.

Palm Treo 750 Review
Digital Trends reviewed the Palm Treo 750 smartphone.
Quote from the review:
"The 750 is saddled with a bloated price: $399.99 with a two-year contract and including a $100 rebate, but $649.99 if you're not buying or extending your Cingular plan. Considering the $499/$599 pricing on the 4GB and 8GB iPhones due in June or the similarly-spec'd Samsung Blackjack at $199.99 w/contract or $499.99 w/o contract, it's hard to justify opting for the 750.

New Palm TREO Announcement on September 12th
Reuters reports that Palm will announce a new TREO Smartphone on September 12th in the UK.
The new TREO is still supposed to ship this year. No details are revealed at this point about the feature set of the new Palm TREO. It is expected though that it will feature 3G, wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
The new TREO the Reuters story is talking about is most likely the leaked Treo 750. Engadget Mobile has recently published photos (Why leakers cannot make decent photos is beyond me - they are always blurry) of a Cingular branded Treo 750 with 3G support.
