Asus responses to IBM Patent Lawsuit
Yesterday IBM filed a lawsuit against ASUSTeK and its North American subsidiary, ASUS Computer International with the FTC. The suit alleges that ASUS has infringed on IBM patents with certain ASUS products.
Asustek Computer (Asus) has posted a comment via the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) saying that the company does not think that any violation has occurred and that its attorneys are looking into the situation.

Sony Ericsson patents Gesture Bluetooth File Transfer
Sony Ericsson filed an interesting patent about transferring files between mobile phones with a gesture.
In the Sony Ericsson patent a user can simply drag an item off the side of the handset screen in the direction of the phone they want to transfer the file to.

TomTom and Garmin settle Patent Dispute
Garmin Ltd. announces today a confidential global settlement of all of its intellectual property litigation with TomTom.
The settlement resolves all of the pending intellectual property litigation including cases in the UK, Netherlands, Wisconsin, and Texas. The parties did not disclose details of their agreement.

Vonage & Verizon Settle Patent Suit
The long running lawsuit between Verizon and Vonage has been resolved. The suit originated over Verizon alleging Vonage had illegally used several Verizon patents in its VOIP phone service.
Vonage has always maintained that it had not used Verizon technology in its services. In March of 2007, a jury found that Vonage had infringed on three Verizon patents and awarded Verizon $58 million in damages. Read more

Genoa Color Patents LCD System that Covers 100% Color Gamut
Genoa Color announced today that it had received a U.S. Patent for a multi-primary color LCD display. The company was granted U.S. Patent number 7,268,757 for “Device, system, and methodology for color display” for an LCD using multiple primary colors.
"This patent strengthens our intellectual property in the LCD display space," says Genoa CEO Ilan Ben-David. "With more than 80 patents pending worldwide, we expect to receive other key grants protecting our multi-primary color innovations in the near future." Read more

Microsoft patents iPhone like User Interface
Microsoft filed a patent that features a user interface that bears similarities to the Apple iPhone interface.
The patent, filed in July 2007, is entitled Extensible filtered lists for mobile device user interface. Some of the filed screens show an UI similar to the Cover flow feature in the iPhone.

Vonage settles Patent Lawsuit with Sprint
Today Vonage announced that it has settled its pending patent dispute with Sprint Communications LP and entered into a licensing arrangement under Sprint's Voice over Packet ("VOP") patent portfolio.
Vonage and Sprint have entered into an agreement to resolve this patent dispute as well as begining a business relationship. In addition, Sprint has agreed to license Vonage its VOP portfolio.

Diebold ATM’s are some of the most common ATM’s used in banking. Over the last 18 months Diebold has been granted five U.S. Patents all relating to methods of allowing portable phone users to interact with Diebold ATM’s with their mobile phones.

Apple files for Charge Denying Patent
Electronics are expensive and that makes them targets for thieves. Apple is trying to find ways to prevent gadget theft and has files a patent on a system that would prevent iPhone's and iPod's from charging if connected to a non approved cable.
The part I don’t get about this system is how exactly you would override such a device. What if I lost my charger and had to buy another one? What if I was at a friend’s house and wanted to recharge from their charger? Read more

Microsoft and Linspire announce Agreement including Patent Covenant
Microsoft and Linux desktop provider Linspire Inc. announced a broad interoperability, technical collaboration that also includes intellectual property assurances.
Through this agreement, the companies will work to advance office document compatibility, enhance instant messaging interoperability and reinforce existing collaboration on digital media. In addition, Linspire will be providing its customers with the option of acquiring a patent covenant from Microsoft for customers operating the Linspire desktop.

Nokia sues QualComm for Patent Infringement
Nokia hits back in the ongoing patent battle with QualComm. The company asks a Texas court to stop Qualcomm's unauthorized use of Nokia's MediaFLO and BREW patents.
The filing relates to Qualcomm's unauthorized use of 6 Nokia implementation patents in its MediaFLO and BREW businesses.
"Nokia has a strong history of innovation in IP broadcast television and mobile download environments predating Qualcomm's activities," said Tero Ojanperä, chief technology officer, Nokia. "This is another example where Qualcomm has effectively copied Nokia's innovations. We believe that, for MediaFLO to evolve and for BREW to remain viable, Qualcomm needs access to these and many other patented Nokia inventions."

Microsoft gets Patent for Music Player Dock in Car Stereo
Microsoft gets awarded a patent for docking station.
The docking station would support portable music player and other handheld devices. You can really patent any kind of obvious thing.
If MS can use the patent against iPod car integrations is questionable.

Apple files Patents for Back-Side Interface for Hand-Held Devices
Apple has filed a patent application describing a devices like an iPod with two screens.
The devices would carry a screen on the front and one on the back side.
The larger backside screen would be touch sensitive and used for interacting with the device. The front side screen would display information and might be designed smaller.
