Dark Knight set to open north of $100 million

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Overwhelmingly positive early reviews and buzz on Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker are producing some potentially batty forecasts for "The Dark Knight," which opens in North American theaters on Friday.

Yet there's just no denying that it will enjoy an impressive bow, likely in the low-$100 million range for the weekend.

Director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale reunite for the follow-up to 2005's "Batman Begins." That film opened on a Wednesday in mid-June, making $72.9 million during its first five days, of which $48.7 million came during the three-day weekend. It ended up with $205.3 million, the second-best performer in the "Batman" franchise after the original "Batman" in 1989 ($251.2 million).

Happy Independence Day to all U.S. readers of I4U NEWS. Today you can sleep in. Next Friday AT&T will open its stores at 8am to start selling the new Apple iPhone 3G.

Next week will be interesting when the lines start to build up. Will it be already Wednesday or just during Thursday night? Apple has apparently substantial stock of the iPhone 3G. Openmoko Neo FreeRuner Mobile Phone available July 4th

Openmoko has announced that its Neo FreeRunner mobile phone will be available for purchase on July 4th. The phone uses GNU/Linux and comes with software for dialing, SMS, and recording contacts. The handset will also receive updates over time that extend its functionality.

The first software download for the device will be in August and will include location based applications. The phone will come in two versions operating on either an 850MHz network or a Tri-Band GSM for use in different countries. Read more

Dell Grabs Top Spot in Open Systems Storage

At a time when Dell’s domestic sales are falling in part due to the poor economy and the fact that many enterprise customers are not spending on IT, Dell is focusing on its worldwide sales to make up the difference. Dell has been doing well in worldwide sales for its PCs over the year and it announced recently that it has become number one worldwide in open systems storage.

Dell says that in Q1 2008 it captured 20.4% of the open systems external worldwide disk array storage market. Dell also says that its revenue in this market was $422 million. The closest competitor to Dell’s market dominance had an 18.5% share of the market and $385 million in revenue. Read more

Nokia opens up Symbian to compete against Google Android

To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. Read more

Livescribe Pulse Smartpen Now Available at Retail

Livescribe announced today that its Pulse Smartpen is now available in retail outlets. We first reported on the Livescribe Pulse Smartpen back in January when it was seen at CES 2008. The pen captured handwriting while recording audio at the same time and syncs the audio to the writing.

Two different Pulse models are offered with one having 1GB of storage and the other having 2GB of storage. The bad part about the pens is that they require special paper to operate. The Livescribe Dot paper and other accessories will be available at Amazon.com and at Target stores starting on July 13th. The 1GB model is $149 and the 2GB is $199. The required notebooks are $20 per four pack. The accessories and pens will be available on July 13th at Target and July 1st at Amazon. Read more

Hours Spent Watching TV and Video to Match Hours Spent Sleeping by 2013

Solutions Research Group published a report today that claims by the year 2013 the typical person will spend as many hours watching video and TV per day as they spend sleeping. Daily video and TV use is expected to climb by 35% with the Internet, Mobile and games driving that growth.

The study says that right now the average American 12 and over spends 6.1 hours per day with video-based entertainment up from 4.6 hours in 1996. The study shows that of the 6.1 hours about 4 hours of that time is from traditional TV viewing. Read more
