Sony Playstation Home 1.3 Launches In September

Sony announced at the Gamescom 2009 that there will be a new Playstation Home update. The Sony Playstation Blog now details the Playstation Home update which is supposed to be launched next month.

Playstation Home 1.3 will allow users to launch any PS3 game directly from Home. Titles that fully support game launching (like Street Fighter IV, Resistance 2, MotorStorm, and Far Cry 2) will be identified by separate icons that appear over an avatar’s head and will have varying degrees of additional multiplayer functionality built in. Loot Delivered to PlayStation Home.

Sony's just announced the formation of a group of developers called 'Loot'. Loot's purpose will be to develop "interactive entertainment products" for the PlayStation Home gaming community. The first Loot release is the "Living Room Stage Set", which is a blank media soundstage that you can fill up with props and cameras and furniture. The "Living Room" set is available now from PlayStation Home in North America.

PlayStation Home is a 3D online gaming community for PlayStation users. On it they can chat and start multiplayer games together. Loot's purpose within Home seems to be to turn it into a profit-generating social environment. Sony sells its customers different sets to decorate their stage with (Living Room is $4.99, which will probably be standard), in the hopes that PlayStation Home will catch on as a social trend and how your 'home' set looks will be a status symbol.

Backstage with Guitar Hero Debuts on PlayStation Home

Activision has announced that Guitar Hero Backstage has now launched on PlayStation Home. The launch adds a virtual destination on PlayStation Home where fans of the franchise can meet up and chat.

Activision says that users of the virtual backstage area can talk about the game, meet new friends, and maybe even find new bands to challenge. The virtual space offers the backstage area and a huge concert venue. Read more

Sony Playstation Home gets mixed Reviews after two Weeks

Sony's virtual world Playstation Home has been in open beta for two weeks now. I have been looking around a bit and visually it is stunning. The interface is easy to use. Voice or keypad is essential though to have meaningful conversations. Overall the virtual PS3 world still feels empty in regards to users and content. Today two big newspapers published reviews about Sony Playstation Home putting their fingers on the current problems.
The Washington Post mentions a good way to make friends in their review. The author bought a snowman head and dressed his avatar in a business suit. This getup apparently made him very popular with the ladies in Playstation Home. Read more

Sony PlayStation Home Launches Tomorrow

Just yesterday, we were speculating on if the launch of PlayStation home would actually happen this year as Sony had promised or if we would get nothing but another delay announcement as time ran out. Sony computer Entertainment has announced today that the PlayStation Home beta will be rolled out globally starting tomorrow.

Some speculation yesterday had the Home service not coming as a firmware update or a download from the PlayStation Store. That is true, though I worried that we might be talking about a physical media install, which we are not. Read more

Prepare for Playstation Home, buy Wireless Keypad for PS3

Sony announced the Wireless Keypad for the PS3 in August. The official Playstation blog features a video that demonstrates the keypad and touts the keyboard as the must have accessory for Playstation Home.

The full QWERTY keyboard is operated with the thumbs. The keypad is paired to the PS3 by connecting it with the included USB cable.
The keypad supports chat and has quick access buttons that can take gamers to the friends list and Message Box during gameplay. Read more

Playstation Home is all about Social

The 3D online community platform Playstation Home is still slated to launch as open beta in Fall. Currently Playstation Home is in extended beta. MTV sat down with Jack Buser, director of the PlayStation 3 virtual world "Home" project last week to get a demonstration of Playstation Home in its current state.
Mr. Buser took a lot of emphasis on the social aspects of the Playstation Home platform and how it will help PS3 gamers to meet each other and "socialize". Read more

How to apply for Playstation Home Beta Test

Sony announces the details on how to apply for the Playstation Home Beta Test in the United States. As reported Japanese PS3 users could already apply for the closed beta of Home in late July.
Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, you are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home Beta test community. Read more

Playstation Home closed Beta about to Start

Sony began taking applications for the Playstation Home closed beta program today. The company is currently only accepting Japanese PS3 owners for the beta program.

Applicants must be over 18 and apply by August 11th to be considered for a random selection to gain access to the new Sony 3D online world. Sony still plans to go open beta with Playstation Home this fall. Read more

I just stumbled over a website Sony has setup for Playstation Home in Japan. I am not sure how long the site has been online, but it has lots of screenshots and explains on a high level Playstation Home and its main components. Read more

Sony Playstation Home Open Beta comes this Fall

Sony released a brief statement in Japan today announcing an open beta for Playstation Home to start this fall.

Sony says to expand the closed Playstation Home beta this Summer allowing more PS3 users in.

In February Sony still claimed a release date for Playstation Home for the PS3 some when in 2008. With an open Beta starting in Fall of this year a full release will not happen anymore in 2008. Read more

Xbox 3D Virtual World necessary to compete with Playstation Home?

We reported earlier today about Sony Playstation Home that will launch some time in 2008. If Sony does everything right it will be huge for the Sony PS3. I actually think Microsoft cannot afford to not launch a similar 3D virtual world for the Xbox 360.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is loosing more and more coolness points. It all started with not having HDMI on the first generation of Xbox 360 consoles. Because Microsoft chose not to integrate a high definition drive inside the Xbox they came out with an HD DVD drive, which is now worthless as HD DVD died last week. Read more

Sony Playstation Home to be best-looking 3D Online World

Sony Playstation Home Creative Director said in an interview with GamesIndustry that the upcoming Home virtual world will be the best-looking and most user-friendly online multiplayer experience. Hey, and I believe him.

The first demos of Playstation Home last year already looked amazing. Second Life graphics look rather poor compared to Playstation Home. Sony should not make the mistake though that graphics and user friendliness are the key to the success of Home alone. Read more

Sony announces mobile phone integrations for Playstation Home at the E3 2007.

Sony is offering mobile phone access to the social and communication features of Playstation Home. You can also directly upload photos taken from your mobile phone into your space on Playstation Home.

Sony Playstation Home Video Demo

As reported this week the rumored Sony Playstation Home 3D social world is launching in autumn 2007. At the GDC 2007 Sony's Phil Harrison demoed the current state of the Playstation Home. And I have to say it looks already very decent and will compete with currently hot 3D online worlds like Second Life.

I especially like the high quality of the environment and the flashy embedded video screens. Additionally the customization options are pretty detailed. Fun aspects are also the embedded bowling game (wii like it) and other retro games.
You can communicate via text and voice chat.

Gametrailers published a couple hours ago a video of the Playstation Home demonstration. See the interesting video below.

Playstation Home for Sony PS3 Rumor

Gaming blog Kotaku broke a rumor yesterday about Sony launching something called Playstation Home. They took a lot of heat (and lots of traffic as a positive) for it from Sony. It is all good now again between Sony and Kotaku, but of course so much attention helps make the rumor about Playstation Home much more believable.

So what is Sony Playstation Home supposed to be?
Something similar to Nintendo's Mii avatar concept. You are supposed to be able to design your avatar that lives in virtual rooms that get filled with items based on your achievements in different games. Of course you would be able to meet other gamers with your avatars and maybe even meet them in your rooms (mySpace in 3D). We will apparently learn all about Playstation Home at the GDC 2007 next week.
