Playstation Home is all about Social
The 3D online community platform Playstation Home is still slated to launch as open beta in Fall. Currently Playstation Home is in extended beta. MTV sat down with Jack Buser, director of the PlayStation 3 virtual world "Home" project last week to get a demonstration of Playstation Home in its current state.
Mr. Buser took a lot of emphasis on the social aspects of the Playstation Home platform and how it will help PS3 gamers to meet each other and "socialize".

Playstation Life for PS3 is available now
Sony launched Playstation Life for the Sony PS3. You can install it right now. Playstation Life is replacing the Folding@Home application as it will contain it.
Life with PlayStation provides an interactive globe, a 3D world map that you can twirl around to see live cloud movement courtesy of the University of Wisconsin, combined with up-to-date weather information from the Weather Channel, top news headlines provided by Google news, and live web cam images via the Earth Television Network.

Playstation Life for the PS3 will be free
Sony delays the Playstation Life service but says it will be free of charge.
Sony announced previously that Playstation Life for the PS3 would launch in August. Now we are in September and Sony is blaming unfinished paperwork for the delay of the 3D earth news service.

Drillbit Taylor is top Movie Download on Sony Playstation Store
Sony published last week's top movie downloads on the Playstation Video Store. Owen Wilson's Drillbit Taylor is holding the top spot.
The Drillbit Taylor movie has been available since July 1st.
Two weeks ago we also looked at the Playstation Video Store download charts and back then the movie 21 was on top. 21 is now in 13th place.
Interestingly the Meet the Spartans movie is still under the top 3 like two weeks ago and even improved to 2nd place.

How to apply for Playstation Home Beta Test
Sony announces the details on how to apply for the Playstation Home Beta Test in the United States. As reported Japanese PS3 users could already apply for the closed beta of Home in late July.
Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, you are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home Beta test community.

Sony announced the Life with Playstation news service for the Sony PS3 in June. The company posted an update on the status of Playstation Life on their blog.

Playstation Home closed Beta about to Start
Sony began taking applications for the Playstation Home closed beta program today. The company is currently only accepting Japanese PS3 owners for the beta program.
Applicants must be over 18 and apply by August 11th to be considered for a random selection to gain access to the new Sony 3D online world. Sony still plans to go open beta with Playstation Home this fall.

Sony launches Playstation Store Video Download and Rental Service on PS3
Sony counters the Xbox 360 Netflix offering with their own movie rental and sale service on the Playstation Network store.
The Sony Playstation Video Store offers videos in SD and HD and you can choose to either just rent them or buy them.

Sony Playstation Home Site available in Japan
The last thing we reported about the Sony Playstation Home 3D world was that the open beta for Playstation Home is to start this fall.
I just stumbled over a website Sony has setup for Playstation Home in Japan. I am not sure how long the site has been online, but it has lots of screenshots and explains on a high level Playstation Home and its main components.

Sony Playstation Life Photos
Yesterday we reported that Sony teased a new service for the Sony PS3 dubbed Life with Playstation. Sony introduced the new service at a media event in Tokyo. Impress published some screen grabs of what Sony showed at the event.
Life with Playstation uses a 3D earth for navigating to news and weather information. Because the service runs on the PS3, the earth looks pretty realistic.

Life with Playstation Service for Sony PS3 coming
Sony is planning to roll out a service called Life with Playstation for the Sony PS3.
The new service is supposed to bring news and weather information to the Sony PS3 in a rich fashion utilizing the power of the CELL CPU.
Life with Playstation is somewhat similar with the current services available on the Nintendo Wii.

The Playstation Eye CEJH-15001 bundle includes besides the video chat feature an interactive entertainment pack.

Sony Playstation Network reaches 1 million Accounts in Japan
Sony announces that the Playstation Network has reached 1 million users in Japan alone.
The Sony Playstation Store has 400,000 unique Playstation Network users per month. Since the launch at the end of 2006, 17 million content items have been downloaded.

Sony Playstation Home Open Beta comes this Fall
Sony released a brief statement in Japan today announcing an open beta for Playstation Home to start this fall.
Sony says to expand the closed Playstation Home beta this Summer allowing more PS3 users in.
In February Sony still claimed a release date for Playstation Home for the PS3 some when in 2008. With an open Beta starting in Fall of this year a full release will not happen anymore in 2008.

Sony PS3 Firmware 2.30 and new Playstation Store available
As promised Sony launched today the new Playstation store and released the latest firmware 2.30 for the PS3.
The big news in the Sony PS3 firmware 2.30 is the support for Blu-ray Disc DTS-HD audio. DTS-HD can deliver audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at high variable bit rates. The codec can deliver up to 7.1 audio at 96k/24-bit.

Sony PS3 Firmware 2.30 Details and Playstation Store Video
We already reported yesterday that the next Sony PS3 firmware 2.30 update will feature DTS-HD. The offical Sony Playstation Blog has now published a video walkthrough featuring the redesigned Playstation Store that will be launched with the new PS3 firmware.

Sony updates Playstation Store
Sony unveiled a couple of screen-shots of the April update of the Playstation store.
The Playstation Store revamp comes in response to a survey last year which showed that many PLAYSTATION Store users wanted a better interface and easier navigation. The new design will deliver a hugely improved navigation system, much greater scope for categorization and a dynamic new user interface.

Sony informs about Sony Playstation Network Security Issue
Sony published a notice informing Sony Playstation Network users about potential unauthorized access to personal information.
Sony says it is possible that the passwords of a small percentage of PLAYSTATION Network users may have been changed through unauthorized access, making it possible to view users’ personal information and/or use the Wallet for the PLAYSTATION Store.

Xbox 3D Virtual World necessary to compete with Playstation Home?
We reported earlier today about Sony Playstation Home that will launch some time in 2008. If Sony does everything right it will be huge for the Sony PS3. I actually think Microsoft cannot afford to not launch a similar 3D virtual world for the Xbox 360.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 is loosing more and more coolness points. It all started with not having HDMI on the first generation of Xbox 360 consoles. Because Microsoft chose not to integrate a high definition drive inside the Xbox they came out with an HD DVD drive, which is now worthless as HD DVD died last week.

Sony Playstation Home to be best-looking 3D Online World
Sony Playstation Home Creative Director said in an interview with GamesIndustry that the upcoming Home virtual world will be the best-looking and most user-friendly online multiplayer experience. Hey, and I believe him.
The first demos of Playstation Home last year already looked amazing. Second Life graphics look rather poor compared to Playstation Home. Sony should not make the mistake though that graphics and user friendliness are the key to the success of Home alone.

Today Sony unveiled the Playstation store for the PC.
The new store allows PSP owners to get video content, services and buy games without a Sony PS3.
Available immediately, full-game downloadable content exclusively available on PLAYSTATION Store for the PC include titles such as Syphon Filter: Combat Ops (price: $9.99). You can also download existing PSP games such as Gangs of London and WipEout Pure, as well PS One classic titles including favorites such as JetMoto and Crash Bandicoot.
