WowWee Robosapien V2 Controlled with Wii Remote
The next version of the Robosapien Dance Machine, the free open source program also known as Robodance, will have support for the Nintendo Wii Remote.
The maker of Robodance has published a lengthy video demonstrating the Wiimote Robosapien control. The funny highlight in the video is a skid where the Robosapien V2 tickles a TMX Elmo.

Robosapien RS Media With Lego Mindstorm NXT Brain
The upcoming Robosapien RS Media from WowWee is apparently enhancable with a Lego Mindstorm NXT module.
The Lego NXT module fits onto the RS Media robot as backpack. With Lego Mindstorm NXT you have of course much greater control on what your Robosapien can do. This is a very smart move by WowWee.
I have the original Robosapien, which looks already pretty 'stupid' against the new Robosapien RS Media, which can now have two brains.

Robosapien Dance Machine
Robert Oschler, the developer of the free open source Robosapien Dance machine software notified us that he published a new video
showing the capabilities of his latest version.
The 1 min. video a Robosapien V2, an original Robosapien, and a Robopet interacting in a funny robot skit. (Lot's of burping involved). Clearly WowWee improved the Burping on the V2 dramatically.
The Robosapien V2 will start shipping from Amazon.com for $229.99 on February 1st. Sharper Image already ships the Signature Series Robosapien V2 for currently reduced price of $229.95.

Robosapien V2 on Sale
The Robosapien V2 is available on Amazon.com for $229.99.
We met the new tall brother of the original Robosapien at the CES 2005. The Robosapien is about 32 inch tall and has more capabilities than the original. New movements include bending, sitting lying down and getting up, waving and martial arts. Interactive sensors should make him react to its surroundings. A new voice system is also in the Robosapien V2 and he can turn his head.
The Robosapien V2 is definitely interesting for every robot hacker out there, as it is very advanced for a toy robot.

Robosapien Robot Fight: Bush Robot against Kerry Robot
Yesterday the big Bush Robosapien versus Kerry Robosapien fight took place at the Wiener Studios.
We reported about How to make two Robosapien Toy Robots fight in September. Yesterday finally we tried the technique proposed by Wow-Wee with the toilet paper roles. The idea block the IR signal from the other remote control to let two or more Robosapiens be controlled independently. To make it more fun we clued the faces of the presidential candidates on the paper roles and put them over the Robosapien heads.
Standing behind the robots, the remotes are now supposed to only control one Robosapien, but it did not work. The robots where moving always in sync. Which is fun to look at, but not usable for fighting. Then Claus identified the problem and fixed it by covering the top of the Robosapien head. Now it worked and the fight of the decade could take place - Bush Robot against Kerry Robot. See below the best photos from the Fight.
Buy a Robosapien for $89.99.

RoboSapien hacked with Pocket PC and Camera
A team of Computer Science Students at the University of Freiburg in Germany hacked a Robosapien to make it autonomous.
This very cool hack of the Robosapien is a bit cruel. They amputated the head and the arms of the Robosapien.
The head got replaced with a Pocket PC and a digital camera on top. The arms got removed because the Robosapien, called NimbRo-RS was competing at the RoboCup 2004 in walking and balance competitions. The arms of the RoboSapien are very heavy and make it difficult for the Robosapien to walk straight.
Interesting videos of the Robosapien walking can be found here. The University published the C++ API for the Robosapien Hack. (news via Slashdot)
The standard edition Robosapien sells usually between $89 and $99.
Check the cheapest online store offers. Amazon.com sells the Robosapien now for $89.99.

How to make Two RoboSapiens Robots Fight
Last week I asked in a story about Robosapien Videos if anybody knows how to let Robosapiens fight against each other.
Marc Robinson (thanks!) sent us links to PDFs from Wowwee that explain how to control two Robosapiens indepently so they can fight against each other. The solution is rather low tech but kind of fun:
1 - Take a standard toilet-roll tube and cut it down the middle.
2 – Squeeze it onto Robosapien’s head as shown in the photo.
The robot will now only be controllable from behind.
I am going to host a Robosapien fight this week to try it out with some friends. I will report on I4U how that went.

Another RoboSapien Toy Robot Review
The-Gadgeteer also reviews the RoboSapien. They even got their cat to play with the little robot. My cat is still scared of the farting and whistling robot.
Quote:
"What fascinates we humans so much about robots? From the menacing Gort in the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, to the lovable Rosie the robot maid in the Jetson's, robots continue to amuse and capture our imagination. My first thought upon seeing this robot was that it reminded me of a Star Wars Storm Trooper. Only on steroids and really little. ;o) The Robosapien is made of similar looking shiny white plastic with black accents.

Robosapien Videos
A Robosapien joined the I4U Team this week. I took some videos of the little robot, that based on the amount of web sites and report growing on the net could make it to be one of the biggest Toys for this Christmas season. The potential hack opportunities drive the fantasies of robot fanatics on coming up with ideas on what to do with this cool and cheap robot (compared to Japanese Fight Robot).
I am for instance wondering if you could have two Robosapiens fight against each other. For that to work the remotes need to be coded, else it is not clear which robot reacts to which remote. Anybody any ideas on this? Post a comment or email us.

Fun Robosapien Review
GadgetMadness reviews the Robosapien Toy robot.
The review also features a Palm OS software called SAPBench to control the robot - very neat.
Quote:
"Battery life on this little guy is outstanding - just how does the Robosapien manage to squeeze so many hours of life out of just four D cell batteries? We suspect alien technology."

We got a tip from I4U Reader Todd, that Costco (large membership based US retailer) has the Robosapien Toy Robot for just $69 in their stores. I cannot confirm this as the robot is not listed on their site yet.
