Samsung Adds Three new DVD Burners to Line

Samsung has added a trio of new DVD burners to its line of optical drives. The units are all in the Super-WriteMaster SH-S223 line including one SATA drive and a pair of PATA drives. All share the same 22x DVD write speeds.

The drives are all internal and have 22x DVD +-R recording, 12x DVD-RAM recording, 16X DVD+R DL, 12X DVD-R DL, 8X DVD+RW, and 6x DVD-RW speeds. The drives all feature buffer under run protection and technology to reduce the noise the drives produce when in use. Read more

The 120Hz refresh rate is twice as fast as many current generation HDTVs that feature a 60Hz refresh rate. The higher refresh rate helps improve image quality by reducing the blurriness often associated with fast action on LCD TVs. The difference in image quality between a 60Hz set and a 120Hz TV is noticeable.

The TV has three HDMI inputs on the back of the TV and a composite AV on the rear. The dynamic contrast ratio is 1,000,000:1 and viewing angles at 178-degrees. Other inputs include a PC input, and dual component inputs. The set isn't cheap at $4,999, but the specifications and screen size are very impressive. Read more

Samsung S1 Mini and S2 portable USB HDDs unveiled

Samsung unveiled the S1 and S2 stylish portable hard-drives today in Korea. LG introduced similar fashion portable hard-drives back in July with the LG XD1. I guess Samsung just did not want to be left behind here.
The Samsung S1 mini contains a 1.8 inch hard-drive, where as the Samsung S2 portable uses 2.5 inch HDDs.

Cheapest Blu-ray Player comes from Samsung

Finding a cheap Blu-ray player is still rather hard. One would expect that they would be selling under the magic $200 price point by now, but they do not. Of course you can always use the PS3 to play Blu-ray movies, but if you do not own one and do not want to pay $399 for it, you do not have that many options.
Low cost electronics brands like Daewoo and Magnavox have Blu-ray players in the pipeline or already on the market. Searching for the best deal on a Blu-ray player I actually landed on a Samsung Blu-ray player. Read more

AT&T and Samsung Launch Rugged Handset

Samsung and AT&T Wireless have launched a new rugged handset aimed at users needing a device that can stand up to the workday. The handset is called the Samsung Rugby and is the first rugged handset to use AT&T's video share calling.

The Rugby operates on the AT&T 3G network and supports push to talk. Other features include email capability, AGPS supporting turn-by-turn driving instructions and more. The clamshell phone is available in construction yellow or deep burgundy colors. The handset is certified to military standard MIL-STD-810F to withstand dust, shock, vibration, rain, humidity and more. The handset is $129.99 with a 2-year agreement. Read more

Sandisk rejects Samsung Takeover Offer

Samsung made a public offer yesterday to buy SanDisk for $5.8 billion in cash after negotiations failed.
Sandisk rejected the offer and describes it as undervalued and opportunistic.
This deal would mark the largest acquisition by Samsung and also the largest purchase of a South Korean company in the United States. Read more

Toshiba, Samsung and Sony to join Netbook Craze

Better late than never, might be the mantra of Toshiba, Samsung and Sony when it comes to releasing a netbook.
Toshiba will release the Satellite NB105 (photo), which already leaked on the Mexican site.
The Satellite NB105 features an 8.9 inch screen with 1024 x 600px resolution, Intel 1.6Ghz Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, LAN, WiFi, 3 USB ports and runs Windows XP. Read more

Samsung Announces New Custom Install MX LCDs

Samsung has announced a new large format LCD screen series that is intended for the custom installation market. The new series is called the MX-series and the screens are ready to connect to satellite or set top boxes.

The series offers quick menu access, automatic video source detection, direct input selection, black-level extension, and 450 nits of brightness. The screens also feature ambient light sensors to adjust the picture for optimum viewing. A pair of 10W speakers are built into the displays as well. Verizon Wireless and Samsung announced today the Samsung Knack mobile phone.
The Knack is a simple to use clamshell phone featuring a 2.2-inch internal screen with large text and number fonts, a simplified user interface and messaging communication.

Samsung Announces L310W Digital Camera

Samsung announced another new digital camera at IFA called the L310W. Samsung says that the camera is designed for intermediate users and has a 13.6MP lens. Other features of the camera include dual image stabilization, a 2.7-inch LCD and a 3.6x optical zoom lens.

The lens is a 28mm wide-angle unit allowing more of the scene to be in an image at the same time. Other features include auto red eye fix, MPEG-4 video recording, face detection, blink detection, smile shot, beauty shot, self portrait and more. Read more

Samsung Unveils 14MP Compact Camera at IFA

Samsung announced the new NV100HD digital camera at IFA in Berlin. The camera is the flagship of the Samsung line with 14.7-megapixels -- the highest resolution in a compact camera so far. The lens is a 28mm wide angle and the LCD on the rear of the camera is a 3-inch unit.

The camera features HD output to big screen TVs and it features 3.6x optical zoom. Other features include digital image stabilization and the ability to record 720p video. The LCD has 460k pixels and should make for good quality image viewing. Read more

Samsung BD-P2500 Blu-ray Player Announced

Samsung has announced its 5th generation Blu-ray player called the BD-P2500. Samsung says that the Blu-ray player is compatible with the latest Blu-ray features like BD Live. The player also supports 7.1-channel analog audio outputs.

The player offers full 1080p resolution and it uses a HQV video processing. Also supported is 7.1 audio and HDMI 1.3 output with xvTCC deep Color support and 24 fps film mode. The player has a wired Ethernet connection, 1GB of internal memory and a USB port for memory expansion. The player will be available in October for $499.99. Read more

The Samsung X360 features a 13.3 inch LED backlit display and can be had with a 120GB SSD or 120GB HDD.
The X360 only weighs 1.27kg and features a slick Protect-o-Edge dubbed case design.

Samsung Launches New LCD Photo Frames

Samsung announced a new line of LCD photo frames that includes four models -- SPF-85H, SPF-85V, SPF-105P, and SPF-105V. The 85H and 85V frames have an 8-inch screen and will sell for $129.99 and $199.99 respectively. The 85V is Wi-Fi enabled and both will be available on September 1st

The 105P and 105V both use 10-inch screens and will be available on October 1st. The 105V is Wi-Fi enabled and will sell for $289.99 with the 105P selling for $199.99. The frames have capacitive touch buttons that disappear after 10 seconds of inactivity. The frames can also act as a second monitor for your computer. Read more

Samsung high-performance, Low Density SSDs Introduced

Samsung has introduced a new line of SSDs using a form factor 30% smaller than the 2.5-inch SSD that is common today. Samsung says the small, high-performance and low-density SATA II SSDs are cost-efficient to make.

The new SSDs are available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities and use multi-level cell technology. The new SSDs will enter mass production next month. The 32GB SSD has a read speed of 90MB/s and a write speed of 70GB/s. The read speed remains constant, but the write speed varies with capacity. The 16GB has a write speed of 45MB/s and the 8GB has a write speed of 25MB/s. Read more
