Smartphones Were Most Returned Holiday Items

A study released by Opinion Research Corporation has revealed that smartphones were the most returned item after the holiday season. According to the study 21% of the smartphones gifted this holiday season were returned to the store.

The study specifically states that these numbers do not count the iPhone and RIM Blackberry devices. "The inability to understand the product setup process was cited as the primary reason consumers returned their Smartphone," said Kevin Wood, VP and Senior Technology Analyst with Opinion Research Corporation. Sprint launches HTC Mogul Smartphone

Sprint introduces the HTC Mogul Windows smartphone.

The HTC Mogul is the first CDMA handset in the U.S. that runs Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition. Sprint will provide an update that will make the HTC Mogul the first EV-DO Rev. supporting device on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network.

The HTC Mogul features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 2MP camera. Measurements are 4.33x2.32x0.73 inch, which makes it thinner than the Sprint PPC-6700 smartphone. Read more

New Palm Treo Smartphone Leaked

Rumors about a new low-cost Palm Treo appeared over the last couple of days supported by leaked images.

The new Palm Treo would come as a Windows and Palm version and sell for $200.
The code name is supposedly "Gandolf".

Acer Plans to enter Smartphone Market and targets RIM's Blackberry

Taiwanese Computer manufacturer Acer is already offering PDAs and now plans to enter the smartphone business in 2007.

In and interview with German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, via Heise, Gianfranco Lanci President of Acer says that the Acer Smartphone in the works is comparable to a RIM Blackberry focusing on Email functionality.

This is not a mind blowing new release and rather a solid update with lots of improvements and Windows Vista support.

Windows Smartphone King HTC Buys Dopod

Taiwanese Smartphone manufacturer HTC (High Tech Computer Corp.) buys 50% of mobile phone vendor Dopod.

Dopod actually specialized to sell Dopod branded HTC smartphones in Asia. Apparently HTC wants to be closer to the market. Dopod will act as a subsidiary of HTC.

Kind of an intersting move to buy one of their customers. HTC is I guess looking for ways to leverage their domination in the Windows smartphone market.

Verizon Brings Motorola Q Smartphone May 31st

Verizon Wireless announces that they will offer the ultra-slim Motorola Q starting May 31st in the United States.

Motorola announced the Q almost 1 year ago in July 2005.

The Moto Q runs Windows Mobile 5.0 and supports EV-DO. Other features include QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth and 1.3MP camera.

With only 11.5mm in thickness the Motorola Q is the slimmest QWERTY smartphone on the planet. Read more

Modeo Windows Smartphone with DVB-H For the US

Modeo LLC pushes DVB-H mobile TV with own designed Windows Smartphone manufactured by HTC.

Apparently Modeo is also itself providing the DVB-H infrastructure. The company piloted DVB-H in Pittsburgh during 2005. Modeo plans to officially launch this network and its commercial-grade multicast mobile broadcast center during 2006 in select major U.S. markets, including New York City. The company currently is working on deployment of the network to the top 30 U.S. markets, with launches targeted throughout 2007.

Modoe competes in the US with QualComm's MediaFlo, which is supposed to be better than DVB-H. At least something is happening. I already thought the United States is loosing touch in the mobile digital TV sector. Read more

Fifth Media announced today the AXIA A308 PDA Phone. The Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone is making its debut at the CeBit 2006 next week.
The quad-band smartphone (GSM, GPRS and EDGE) also features Wifi connectivity.

So now how big is the World's smallest Windows Mobile 5.0 phone? It measures 20.8x48.8x113.3mm and weighs 128g. This is really small for a Windows Mobile smartphone. Read more

Motherboard maker Gigabyte announced their entry into the mobile phone market this summer. With the Einstein, Gigabyte already has a very hot Windows smartphone available.

msmobiles found tons of photos of the Gigabyte Einstein compared to other smartphones on Taiwanese message boards. What can be seen is that the Gigabyte slider style smartphone is actually very compact. The phone runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and features a 2.4 inch screen with QVGA resolution, 2.1MP camera, FM Tuner and a TV Tuner. Read more
