Sony PS3 outsold Xbox 360 in July again

According to NDP the Sony PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 game console in July again. Sales are far less than in June, but still beating the Xbox 360 sales for the month.
The Sony PS3 sold 224,900 units and the Xbox 360 sold 204,800 units in the United States.
The unstopable Nintendo Wii outsold both, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 with 555,000 units sold during the month. Read more

70-60% of Sony PS3 Power still untapped

As we know Sony always preaches that the PS3 is going to stay for 10 years. In an interview with game developer Naughty Dog over at the ThreeSpeech, Richard Lemarchand says that the company thinks that they still just use 30-40% of the power of the PS3.
I just hope that is true, as I am still expecting much more to see from the CELL CPU of the PS3. Read more

21 tops Video Downloads on Sony PS3

The Sony Playstation Video Store on the PS3 has been open for a couple of weeks. Sony published on their official blog new additions to the catalog and also the top 20 video downloads.

The poker movie 21 leads the charts in front of 10,000BC and Meet the Spartans. The Sony Playstation Video Store download charts are very different from the top TV and movie purchases on Amazon.com. Read more

Sony sets overall Sales Target for Sony PS3 to 150 million Units

The Sony PS2 has sold over 140 million units over the nine years on the market. For Sony's Kaz Hirai it is clear that the Sony PS3 needs to beat that number. At the E3 2008 he set the overall sales goal to 150 million units for the PS3.

The Sony PS3 sales since its launch are around 13 million units, so there is still a very long path ahead for Sony to reach 150 million. Of course Sony bets to see the same adoption curve they have seen on the PS2 over the almost 10 year life cycle. Read more

As reported briefly during the Sony E3 2008 briefing Sony is offering a new PS3 console with 80GB for the price of the currently available 40GB PS3. We have now got the retail box image and more details about the new PS3 console offering.

Sony positions the new 80GB PS3 as the only PS3 console version moving forward. Like the 40GB PS3, the new 80GB version will have no PS2 backward compatibility. Read more

Sony PS3 gains on Nintendo Wii Sales in Japan

The Sony PS3 console sales are getting closer to the still leading Wii console according to June sales numbers in Japan

Enterbrain reports that Nintendo sold 235,990 Wii consoles in the five weeks ended June 29th, while sales of the Sony PS3 reached 139,494 units.

The Xbox 360 does not count in the Japanese console race in Japan with only 10,964 consoles. Read more

Sony PS3 Firmware 2.40 Update temporarily removed

Sony has removed the new PS3 Firmware 2.40, because of some PS3 owners reports about bricked PS3 consoles after they installed the update.

Sony says on its Playstation blog that the issue is limited to some users, but they want to make sure what is going on and that is why the pulled the update until the issue is resolved. Read more

Sony PS3 Firmware 2.40 Release on July 2nd

Sony just announced that the new major firmware update 2.40 will be released on July 2nd.

The Sony PS3 firmware 2.40 enhancement allows XMB (XrossMediaBar) access in-game. This means that you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller.
With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing. While you can’t pause an online multiplayer game involving other people, you can rejoin play at any time when you’ve finished browsing. Along with these enhanced communications features, the Friends list capacity will double to 100 Friends. Read more

Rumble is finally coming to Europe! Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller will be available for PS3 in Europe on July 2nd, 2008.

Japan has had the Dualshock controller since last year and the U.S. gamers got the vibrating PS3 controller in April. Read more

Sony PS3 Console to utilize 65nm RSX Chips this Fall

Sony's Kaz Hirai let out some details about the state of the cost cutting of the Sony PS3 hardware.

Sony has been shipping PS3 consoles with a 65nm Cell CPU since the last holiday shopping season. The original Cell was still using 90nm technology.
This Fall the Sony PS3 consoles will also feature 65nm RSX Chips. Read more
