Android 2.0 Already Ported Onto T-Mobile G1

The whole discussion on whether or not the G1 can run the new Android 2.0 release can end now, as the first rough ports from developers appeared enabling Android 2.0 to be loaded on the T-Mobile G1. The Android 2.0 port does not offer full functionality yet, it is more of a proof of concept.

Of course it still remains to be seen if T-Mobile is releasing an official Android 2.0 update for the G1. Read more

T-Mobile launched the Google Android G1 in black. It has since been also available in Bronze now the T-Mobile G1 also comes in "Apple White".
Apparently the white T-Mobile should be already in stock at some T-Mobile stores reports BGR.
White makes portable gadgets still look more interesting. If you still have waited with the T-Mobile G1 purchase you can now choose between 3 colors. Read more

I have hesitated a bit to recommend the HTC G1 as a gift as Android is rather early stage and you could call the G1 a project. On the other hand it is one of the few things you can get in on at the ground level. It is new and promising as the Adobe Flash Player 10 running on Android showed impressively today.

The Apple iPhone might never get Adobe Flash because it would impact Apple's software control over the iPhone. See this new Wired article about this topic. This is a real disadvantage for the iPhone as Flash is very popular on the web especially for video playback and online games. Read more

T-Mobile G1 Google Phone Unlocking Service Available

If you have your heart set on a G1 from T-Mobile but don’t want to use T-Mobiles network you can now get an unlock code for the G1 from Global Unlock. The company is offering an unlock code that it claims will allow the phone to operate on any GSM network.

After unlocking, the phone will operate on any of the 670 global GSM networks available by inserting one of the company's SIM cards. Once the Sim card is installed, the phone can make calls, text messages and use data service. Users can also continue using the G1 on T-Mobile. Read more

T-Mobile G1 Early Adoption Soars

According to WebTrends, the early adoption rate for the T-Mobile G1 Android-powered mobile phone is soaring. Within the first few days of availability, many of the largest newspapers in the UK reported a surge in readers using the G1's browser. Telegraph.co.uk reports that it has seen 5,000 downloads and 31,000 visits from G1's browser.

WebTrends updated its tracking app to look for the G1 browser on the day the device launched in the UK. Thanks to the huge influx of users browsing the sites with G1 devices, the handset could prove to be the biggest challenge yet to the iPhone. Read more

T-Mobile G1 Android Apps available on Handango

There is the Android Market, but there are also other App stores now offering applications for the Android smartphones like Handango.
Unlike the iPhone where Apple has everything under their control, the Android eco system is a bit more open. Tetris from EA Mobile for the G1 sells for instance for $7.99.

The Google operated Android Market has about 170 apps right now. Handango offers 41 apps for the G1 right now. Read more

T-Mobile G1 is unlocked

The T-Mobile G1 can now be unlocked. A site dubbed Unlock-TMobileG1 offers to unlock your Android phone for a fee - a not very "open-source-thing" to do.
The guys over at Android Community are still happy about the unlocking possiblity, even if it doesn't give you all the features.
The unlocking requires $22.95 and sending your phones IMEI code to the unlockers. Read more

iPhone 3G could sell as low as $99 and T-Mobile G1 gets rolledback at Wal-mart

The smartphone battle will still get a lot more interesting for us consumers on the pricing side of things. Analyst Charlie Wolf of Needham Research says that Apple can afford to drop the iPhone 3G price to $99 if necessary. Via Electronista.

Given the high prices RIM keeps on their new Blackberry Bold ($299.99 with 2 year contract) and most likely also on the new BlackBerry Storm a price drop like that would hurt pretty bad.
The only other smartphone that would not hesitate to cut prices is the new T-Mobile G1 as it seems. Read more

I have seen the ZAGG film in Wal-Mart before. The G1 kit is priced at $24.95 and makes the phone scratch resistant. I have used the film for a long time on my iPhone and it works fantastically for scratch protection. Read more

T-Mobile G1 not sold out yet

The first Google Android phone has been shipping since Wednesday. There is a warning on the online ordering page of the G1 that it would be in "Extremely limited supply", but it looks like you can order the first Google phone without delays now for $179.99 with a two year contract.

Yahoo! Tech also reports that T-Mobile stores still have the G1 in stock and the run on the phones was by far not as crazy as it was for the iPhone. Read more

The launch of the first Android mobile phone draws nearer and today lots of T-Mobile G1 reviews have hit the web. T-Mobile will officially launch the G1 on October 22nd. Reports indicated that early adopters who have already pre-ordered early on might get the T-Mobile G1 in their mail already Friday.
Walter Mossberg's verdict of the T-Mobile G1 is kind of flat: "Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers.". T-Mobile G1 Android Phone already sold 1.5 million Units?

We already reported that pre-orders for the first Android smartphone are very strong. Now Fool.com puts a number on how well the T-Mobile G1 pre-orders are actually going. If the number is correct, early adopters already ordered 1.5 million T-Mobile G1 phones. It looks like the Google controlled Open Source Phone is off to a great start.
I am still not convinced that the T-Mobile G1 is ready for the mainstream smart phone user. Sales could drop as quickly as the downloads did for the Google Chrome browser. Read more

You can play virtually with the user interface and with some G1 applications. Not all screens are completely interactive though. Read more

T-Mobile G1 Pre-order Sales runs red hot

T-Mobile says that there is overwhelming demand for the first Google Android phone and the company is offering up more T-Mobile G1 for pre-order.
If you have pre-ordered your T-Mobile G1 before October 3rd you are supposed to get it as early as October 22nd.
If you pre-order a G1 now through October 21st you will get your Android phone on November 10th. Of course there are no guarantees with these delivery dates. Read more

T-Mobile officially announced the first Android powered mobile phone yesterday called the G1. The smartphone uses the new Google Android OS and features a QWERTY keyboard. The phone promises a great web surfing experience with access to Google Maps Street View, Gmail, YouTube, and more.

Qualcomm Dual-core Chipset Powers T-Mobile G1

Qualcomm has announced that its dual-core MSM7201A chipset is powering the G1 from T-Mobile; the first Google Android powered mobile phone. The chipset features built-in 3D graphics, multi mode 3G support and more.

The phones 3MP camera sensor can scan barcodes for applications that support barcode reading. The chipset also supports GPS for location-based services and more. Qualcomm says it is also working with other OEMs to build other Android powered devices. Read more

A Day before the press-conference unveiling the T-Mobile G1 with Google Android mobile phone, the G1 site already went life.
The site does not have much content yet, which will be released after the press-conference tomorrow, which starts at 10:30am EDT. The web page indicates that T-Mobile will have an on demand video stream of the event on this site, after the event closes.
