Gateway CX200X Tablet PC Review
Bill Gates is still very fond of Tablet PCs. He touted them again yesterday in his CES Keynote (see Engadget for a nice coverage). Bill even mentions Gateway who he says make nice Tablet with a mainstream price giving consumers a choice. To help you make this choice Designtechnica has published a review of the Gateway CX200X Tablet PC.
Quote:
"The Gateway CX200X is, as the company describes, targeted towards consumers who seek a full-featured notebook PC combined with pen input functionality.
While the CX200X certainly delivers in this regard, it is extremely hampered by its bulky size and weight which make it less than desirable to cradle for too long when in tablet mode. Marks are good for performance and features however, helping to keep this convertible from the scrap heap.

Why Tablets CAN Replace Laptops
Liam Breck from Network Improv writes the following obout his handwriting recognition software for TabletPCs.
"Handwriting recognition is a wonderful thing. It feels gratifying to have a computer recognize your pen marks on its surface. It may even improve your penmanship as you adapt to its tolerances, which are finer than your own. The Tablet PC's recognizer is remarkably fast and accurate, and getting better.
But by now it should be clear that handwriting is not a high-productivity writing technique. It is slow, and worse, it is tiring. It is terribly tedious by comparison to two-handed touch-typing. The emphasis on handwriting in several generations of pen-based computers has relegated them to museums. But now, happily, the Tablet PC has the capacity, and the applications, to relegate handwriting to history.

Text Entry for Tablet PCs Made Faster and Easier
ExIdeas announces the launch of MessagEase for Tablet PCs and Windows mobile devices. This new offering is supposed to provide a fast and easy text entry alternative for Tablet PCs.
"Text entry is the weakest link for a Tablet PC. The QWERTY keyboard is designed for ten fingers not one finger or one stylus. Pecking tiny QWERTY keys is a very arduous task, frustrating Tablet PC users" said Saied Nesbat, Ph.D., President and CEO of ExIdeas.
MessagEase technology is also available for PDAs and is applicable to cell phones (demo available today), TV remote controls, watches, car navigation systems, or any small device that cannot accommodate a ten-finger QWERTY keyboard. Currently MessagEase enjoys a substantial and growing number of dedicated users among Pocket PC and Palm PDA owners. To date more than 300,000 copies of MessagEase products have been downloaded and more than 1500 users have joined its Yahoo users group.
