TiVo Files Patent Infringement Against AT&T and Verizon

A judge in the Eastern District of Texas, United States District Court has opened the floodgates for patent infringement suits. This same judge has awarded damages to patent holders against Nintendo and other major companies in the several months.

TiVo has decided to take its chances in the courtroom and has filed a patent infringement suit against AT&T and Verizon over patents having to do with DVR functionality. The patents in question are numbers 6,233,389 B1 ("Multimedia Time Warping System"), 7,529,465 B2 ("System for Time Shifting Multimedia Content Streams"), and 7,493,015 B1 ("Automatic Playback Overshoot Correction System"). Amazon HD VOD Finally Comes to Tivo

Tivo further cemented its status as the couch-potato’s best friend as it announced and offered Amazon HD video on demand (VOD) earlier today. Tivo subscribers with a Series3, Tivo HD, or Tivo HD XL box can now stream HD movies and television shows, most with Dolby Digital 5.1 support.

Movies will run viewers $3.99 to $4.99 per title, while television shows are available for $2.99 an episode.

"Consumers are seeking affordable entertainment alternatives to an expensive trip to the movies. With HD downloads for movies and TV shows, TiVo and Amazon can transform any night into a memorable movie experience, all for a fraction of the cost of the theater," Tara Maitra, Tivo’s GM and VP of content services and advertising said in a release.

Blockbuster OnDemand to be available on TiVo

Netflix is already available on TiVo and now Blockbuster also decided that TiVo is a good platform to offer their Blockbuster OnDemand service.
Blockbuster OnDemand, featuring content to both buy and rent, will be integrated into TiVo Series2, Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL DVRs. Read more

TiVo Super Bowl 2009 Ad Ratings see GoDaddy on Top

Ad critics will hate this one. TiVo just announced their Super Bowl 2009 Ad statistics and a GoDaddy Super Bowl 2009 commercial took the number one spot.
TiVo bases its Super Bowl rankings on the behavior of TiVo users. Basically the most rewound and watched again Super Bowl ads win.
Apparently GoDaddy got lucky with their last minute 2nd Super Bowl ad spot purchase, because the late ad actually got ranked #1. GoDaddy's "Enhanced?" ad is the winner of the TiVo Super Bowl rankings and not the Shower Ad. Read more

Super Bowl Party Tips from TiVo

The big game is this weekend and many sports fans have big parties planned to celebrate the Super Bowl. TiVo is offering party planners some tips to take the stress out of the big game. According to the tips, food is the big thing. Apparently, Domino's delivers 44% more pizza on Super Bowl Sunday than any other Sunday.

Naturally, you can order Domino's directly from your TiVo receiver. There are other half time shows if Bruce Springsteen isn’t your style. I still miss the Beavis & Butthead Butt Bowl from my college days. TiVo will let you listen to music to get pumped, Eye of the Tiger FTW! Read more

TiVo Ads coming to Pause Screen

TiVo, one of the greatest inventions of our time, has announced something that runs contrary to everything the TiVo stands for -- skipping ads and commercials. TiVo will be adding ads to the pause menu that will display while programs are paused.

At least it's not announcing a method to force us to watch commercials. TiVo is in a bit of a bind when it comes to customers recently, with people leaving the service. Zatz Not Funny quotes TiVo saying, "Using the TiVo Pause Menu, advertisers can, for the first time, reach audiences with targeted product messages displayed within the pause screen of a Live or Timeshifted program. The feature provides an original solution for advertisers seeking to capture the fast-forwarding viewer. It’s another example of how TiVo offers unique and different solutions for advertisers looking to get viewers to watch advertisement." Read more

TiVo Reports Record Profits for Q3

TiVo has reported record profits for Q3 2008. The net income for the quarter was $100.6 million compared to a loss of $8.3 million a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA for Q3 was $95.3 million compared to $0.2 million the same quarter last year.

Technology and service revenues for the quarter were $51.7 million compares to $58.3 million in Q3 2007. TiVo owned subscription gross for Q3 was 44,000 compared to 69,000 last year. Churn rate was 1.4% compared to 1.5% last year. Read more

2009 Super Bowl Ads TiVo Rankings will be much improved

The rankings of which Super Bowl commercials will be paused and watched again on TiVo will be much improved in 2009. Every year TiVo publishes a ranking of the best Super Bowl ads based on TiVo user behavior.
TiVo announced today to increase the scope of its Stop||Watch ratings service by substantially increasing the sample size from which it derives its anonymous, second-by-second audience research data from 20,000 to 100,000 TiVo subscribers. Read more
