TomTom already announced the Personal Navigator 5 in March. The Scotsman (via Textuality) reports that the navigation system for PDAs and Smartphones is now on sale in the UK.
The personal GPS solution contains a Bluetooth GPS unit (see photo) and Software for Windows Mobile and Palm OS. I do not see Symbian support on TomTom's
compatibility list. TomTom Navigator 5 should also be available in the US, but I have not seen it yet in stores.
We reported about a similar GPS solution for mobile phones from Gate5 called smart2go, which supports also Symbian OS.

CES 2005: Garmin Street Pilot c330 goes against TomTom ToGo
Garmin shows the Street Pilot c330 that competes directly with the TomTom ToGo GPS Gadget. Apparently Garmin already had the Street Pilot in the works, when TomTom stole their thunder and released the ToGo before them.
The StreetPilot "c-series" GPS navigators feature a simple touchscreen interface, with automatic route calculation to any destination and turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions along the way. Selecting a destination is straightforward and requires only a limited amount of input from the user. Plus, the StreetPilot c320 and StreetPilot c330 allow you to choose between a three-dimensional navigation view or the more traditional “bird’s eye” overhead view.
The centerpiece of both units is a bright, 3.5-inch diagonal, 16-bit color display.
Available in March 2005 at an MSRP of $964.20.

TomTom forced to release their Linux Kernel Source
TomTom Go
TomTom (check out the cool TomTom Go) one of the leading GPS navigation software and systems manufacturer was forced by gpl-violations.org to publish their Linux kernel source under GPL.
The source code for the Linux Operating System Kernel, including TomTom's own modifications, is now made available at http://www.tomtom.com/gpl.
As part of the agreement, TomTom will show it's appreciation of the Free Software and technology enthusiast movement by making a significant donation to the Chaos Computer Club.
Even if its free, there are still rules to comply with, like giving back. This is an important lesson for Software vendors, they need to check their source code to make sure they comply with the GNU GPL License, they might end up having to release propriatary technology, which can become a big problem.
The gpl-violations.org project is a volunteer-based effort to make corporate distributors of GPL-licensed Free Software aware of the licensing issues involved with GPL-licensed software.
More details on GPL-violations.org.
