Sharp and IBM Developed Small Voice-To-Voice Translator
Sharp will introduce a small handheld device that can translate spoken japanese into English and vice-versa.
This is similar to the Sony PSP Talkman. I assume the new Sharp translator is more sophisticated. It runs IBM speech recognition software that is normally run on PCs.
The US military has been using a PDA-sized device called Pharselator since 2003.

Takara Meowlingual Cat Translator Goes on Sale in Japan
We reported about the Meowlingual Cat Translator in July. Now Toy-Maker Takara announces (via Yahoo) today that Meowlingual starts to sell in Japan.
The product can supposedly translate for 14 breeds. It has basically the same functions as those in Takara's dog translator toy, Bowlingual, and a suggested retail price of 8,800 yen. Takara is aiming for sales of 300,000 units by the March 31, 2004 end of the current business year.
The palm-sized meow analyzer has a built-in microphone and liquid crystal display (LCD), while Bowlingual is a package of an LCD unit and a separate microphone that can be attached to a dog's collar. The toy translates meows and purrs into human language such as, 'I can't stand it'. See Product Brochure for more details.

Bow-Lingual, The Dog Translator Available in the US
We reported about the japanese craze of electronic cat and dog translators in July. Takaras Bow Lingual sold back then already over 300,000 times in Japan.
Sharper Image picked up the dog translator and sells it for $99.99 in the USA.
Bow-Lingual, The Dog Translator was developed by Dr. Norio Kogure, a PhD in veterinary medicine at Tokyo's Kogue Animal Hospital. Working with leading scientists at the Japan Acoustic Laboratory, Dr. Kogure recorded hundreds of breeds and analyzed thousands of voice (bark) prints. Their intensive observations and analysis led them to categorize canine communication into six emotions — Happy, Sad, Frustrated, Needy, Angry and Assertive — and to create the first Animal Emotion Analysis System (AEAS), which is the sophisticated technology behind Bow-Lingual. More on the Bow Lingual at SharperImage.com

Bow-Lingual, The Dog Translator is definitly the ideal Gift for a Gadget Freak who owns a dog.
