Palm TREO 650 Review
The people at Designtechnica review the Palm Treo 650 smartphone.
Quote:
"If you're tired of lugging around your cell phone, PDA, and digital camera every time you leave home, the Treo 650 is worth a gander.
While the operating system is aged, the phone is prone to crashing, and you will need to buy an additional SD memory card to get a respectable amount of storage, the undeniable convenience of this hybrid phone should not scare you away."

Palm Treo 650 Better than Windows Treo 700w
Despite CES going on WSJ's Walt Mossberg still has time to review gagdets.
He tests the new Windows Mobile powered Treo 700w.
Is verdict: "Despite some nice new features, the Windows Mobile software is still inferior to the Palm software for one-handed use on the go."
He basically says, if you are not a Microsoft addict stick with a Palm Treo for now.
Read the full review. See also the comments about this review on msmobiles.
They also point out that the Treo 700w does not come with AKU 2.0 pack, which
would include the push email capability.

Windows TREO Photos
After yesterday's press event, where Palm, Microsoft and Verizon introduced a Palm TREO running Windows Mobile 5.0 and featuring Verizon broadband EV-DO connectivity, Palm released a couple of official photos of their Windows smartphone.
As reported Palm did not reveal much about the specifications. Not even the model number of the Windows Treo was revealed. It is probably Treo 700w or Treo 700.
This photo shows the Treo 650 next to the Windows Treo. This photo shows the messaging screen of the Windows Treo. And this hi-res photo shows again a Palm OS Treo and a Windows Treo held in hands.

Live Transcript:
Bill Gates and the CEOs of Palm and Verizon just took the stage.
3G (EV-DO) Palm Windows TREO!
Bill Gates goes on about every professional will have a mobile device connected to email - obviously! Bill got his Windows Treo this morning ;)
The new Windows TREO comes early next year. Here is the joint press-release.
Ok the demo of the Windows TREO is going on right now. The newness is gone of this story. The Windows TREO is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone within a TREO hardware.
Which is a great solid move for all involved companies. My take is that the Windows TREO will be a huge success and is able to declare war on the Blackberry.

Windows Palm Treo 670 Images and Video
Engadget has it covered when it comes to photos and videos of the unannounced Palm Treo 670 that runs not the Palm OS, but Windows Mobile.
So what to make of this? Palm is of course since the split between Hardware and Software units independent from Palm Source which develops the Palm OS.
Still I do not think Palm Source is very happy about this move. For Palm this can
definitely open new markets. There are tons of users out their that are sworn in on Microsoft Windows. The Treo hardware is very decent, which will make Palm a great contender in the Windows Mobile device space.
Is this the end of Palm OS? I do not know. It is for sure not helping.

PalmOne's Treo 650 Memory Problem Solution
PalmOne's Treo 650 Memory Problem Solution is to give every owner of a Treo 650 a 128MB SD-Card until PalmOne is able to fix the issue, which can take a while.
The Treo 650 use a special file allocation system for data stored in Flash. The size of each block in which data can currently be stored is 512 bytes. Files smaller than that also take 512 bytes resulting in higher memory usage than on the Treo 600. Why PalmOne did not find this out before-hand is quite strange. Looks like they did not do real world testing of the Treo 650.
More details on The Register.

PalmOne Treo 650 Review
Treonauts reviews indepth the new Treo 650 with many photos.
Quote:
"First of all it must be noted that the Treo 650 is not just a 'minor' upgrade to the Treo 600 but a completely new redesigned smart phone. Considering that the Treo 600 was already the best smart phone in the world, that no other contender comes even close to matching the overall capabilities, flexibility and usability of either the Treo 600 or 650 there really can be no other logical conclusion than that the Treo 650 is now the very best - perhaps even the only real - smart phone on the planet."

Treo 600 is Great but does it do Entertainment?
Andrew Carton writes:
Considering all the hype surrounding the video iPod and forthcoming PMP's I thought it worthwhile to review the significant existing digital entertainment capabilities of the Treo 600.
Consider that PalmOne expects the Treo line of products to account for more than 50% of its revenues by the end of fiscal 2005 (vs. only 20% for Apple's iPod). My position is that PalmOne will find it significantly easier to achieve this objective if it positions the Treo away from just a business tool to become a lifestyle device and thus of appeal to a much wider audience.

Sprint Shops supposedly have problems activating Treo 600
We reported about Sprint carrying the Treo 600 starting in October.
An anonymous I4U reader just wrote us this ( no guarantee it is true):
"I'm a data support person at one of Sprint's vendor sites trying to activate a Treo 600 for a business customer who received the device today by mail to replace their Treo 300. At this moment, there is No Published Info on our internal knowledge bases about the Treo 600, and I'm scrambling for info to help them activate and use the phone!!!! Same thing happened at Sprint with the introduction of the Sanyo 8100."
So if you are lucky enough to already get a Treo 600, you might not yet be able to use it. Is your Sprint Treo 600 working yet ? Please reply to this story with your first Treo 600 experiences.
I held one the other day, its a really nice piece of gadgetery. Small, nice screen, but you know all that. Treo 600 Product Page.
Update:
I put the question up at the sprintusers.com forum, and a sprint user posted that she just activated her Treo 600 today. So i guess its a matter of finding somebody at a Sprint store who knows how to do it.
Update 10/08/03:
A Treo 600 user posted in the SprintUsers Forum the steps to activate the Treo 600:
1) enter the ## code they give you
2) Press the sent joystick button
3) Enter you phoe number
4) Enter your MSID (usually the phone number, but not always)
5) Click save
6) Wait for Vision to provision
