SimulScribe published two Apple spoof ads that make fun of iPhone Visual voicemail feature.
SimulScribe is actually converting voicemails into text and sends them as text message. Apple's visual voicemail is not doing that. The visual aspect is just in the management of the voicemail box.

Globalstar Offers Unlimited Satellite Voice & Data Plan for $49.99
What do you do when you live or work in an area where you can’t get reliable cellular or land line phone services? You go with satellite phones of course, just like the guys in 24. I have heard of satellite service before but I always assumed it was hundreds of dollars per month to get that sort of service.
Globalstar USA has a constellation of satellites in orbit to provide voice and data services. The surprise for me came in Globalstar’s pricing, they offer unlimited airtime for $49.99 per month. That is cheaper than my cellular plan. Each year through 2010 the price of the unlimited plan goes down so in 2008 it will cost $39.99, and in 2009- 2010 it will be $19.99.
There are a couple catches to the service, the first is the phone. They are larger than current cellular phones and sport giant antennas that you have seen on TV most likely. The phones themselves will run you from $799 to $999 which isn’t that much more than you will pay for that new N95 from Nokia. Read more

Star Trek Voice Operated Dimmer, a Geeks Clapper
Somewhere out there a Trekkie geek is about to burst a blood vessel. If you like the convenience of a device like the Clapper, but the Clapper just isn’t quite geeky enough for you how about a Star Trek Voice Operated dimmer?
Plug this thing in between your lamp and the out let and you can dim the lights in your room via voice commands straight from the bridge of the Enterprise. Alas it doesn’t appear to recognize anything with the word tachyon in it but you can say “Computer lights to 50%” and have them dim to 50%. Read more

New Voice Controlled TV Remote Controls
A new bread of voice controlled TV remotes is supposed to take watching TV to the next level.
The Promptu (made by AgileTV) voice controlled TV Remote has a TV program search engine built-in that allows users to utter commands like: "Watch Oprah" or "Nicole Kidman movies". The Promptu system will scan through the available current running programs and switch to what the user wants to view if available. Only works well of course on systems with lots of channels. I could not find where the Promptu remote is sold. The video on the site says it is available now.
More details and video of the Promptu in action here. (via Slashdot).
The NY Times runs an article on Voice controlled TVs and paints a scenario where consumers will order Pizza by talking to the TV (Interactive TV). The article also mentions OneVideo, that is also developing a voice controlled TV system.
Voice Activated TV Remotes or voice activated appliances are not a new idea, the combination with smart software is new and possible the key to success.

No, not that Joel would not be a celebrity (he is, he interviewed Bill Gates for crying out loud), Joel knew about it. He had a company called Flexilis proof it to him that they could hack his T-Mobile voice mail - and they could.
The story on Gizmodo also instructs how every T-Mobile user can secure his or her voice-mail by setting up a password.
