802.11v Standard Coming to make WLAN Green Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review A future version of the Wi-Fi standard called 802.11v will bring with it new power saving features that are intended to add a green aspect to wireless LANs. Work on the 802.11v standard began in 2004 and is expected to be complete in 2010. Features will include a Wireless Network Management Sleep Mode that will allow for longer power-off times for 802.11 radios.

Wake on WLAN capabilities will be added to allow managers to wake wireless computers and other appliances. A Proxy ARP will allow an access point to respond to ARP requests. The standard will include several more power saving features. Read more

The Nokia N80 is the first quadband handset designed to work on 3G (WCDMA 1900 or 2100), WLAN, EDGE and four GSM bands (850/900/1800/1900), enabling broadband access from virtually anywhere in the world. This Slider phone is pretty small, just a little bit taller than a credit-card. Nice work Nokia.

The new Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map is supported by the N80, featuring a semi-transparent zoomed-out overall view of the web page, enabling users to intuitively navigate to all corners as well as see the web site as it was originally designed.
Other features include: QVGA screen, 3MP Digital Camera, miniSD card slot up to 2GB, Music player, FM-Tuner and USB 2.0 and supports UPnP technology. Read more

Photo: Neonode N1m Neonode announces that it works on a WLAN enabled mobile phone to be released in the second half of 2005.

Neonode has since last fall cooperated with Philips Semiconductors to develop a mobile with low power consumption and WLAN support. The press-release has no technical details. It talks mostly about the benefits of having WLAN capabilities in a mobile phone: Cheap Internet Access, VOIP, higher bandwidth.

NTT DoCoMo launches WLAN 3G N900iL Mobile Phone Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review NTT DoCoMo announced today a dual network 3G FOMA® handset that runs on both FOMA and wireless LAN networks.

The N900iL, which is scheduled to be marketed in Fall 2004, has been specifically designed to support the new PASSAGE DUPLE™ system that was developed by DoCoMo to integrate the two-network operation.
Under the PASSAGE DUPLE system, the N900iL may be used as a standard FOMA handset, as well as an in-house VoIP phone utilizing a company's internal wireless LAN network.
In addition, users may engage in instant messaging between N900iL handsets over the wireless LAN network.
The N900iL measures approx. 102 x 48 x 27 mm and weighs 120g. It supports the 802.11b WLAN standard. The mobile phone features a 2.2" color screen, one 1MP digital camera, one 0,11 camera, and miniSD card slot.
