Western Digital Introduces 320GB Scorpio Notebook HDD

Western Digital Introduces 320GB Scorpio Notebook HDD Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Western Digital announced its latest notebook hard drive today called the Scorpio 320GB SATA hard drive. This drive uses the 2.5-inch form factor for use in notebook computers and small external hard drive enclosures.

The drive is also very slim with a 9.5mm thickness and uses proprietary technology to keep the drive quiet. The transfer rate for the drive is 3 GB/s and it has a rotational speed of 5400rpm. Read more

Today they have added a fourth new My Book Edition called the My Book Studio Edition. The drive is formatted for Mac users and is equipped with quadruple interfaces.

Interface options include USB 2.0, FireWire 400/800, and eSATA. Capacities available range from 320GB to 1TB and Mac software for automatic, continual backups is included. The software will also encrypt backups as well. Read more

AV use is one of the fastest growing sectors of hard drive use. This makes sense if you consider how many people are currently using DVR and Tivo devices that rely on HDD internally to store video.

The new WD line was built around durability more than size increases or even new speeds. In addition to being built for optimal durability the new drives are also made to be quiet and cool as well. Anyone who has used a DVR inside a closed entertainment center can tell you how much heat they put out. One of my biggest issues with my SuddenLink DVR is the noise the HDD makes as it seeks and writes data. The new drive is shipping configured for RAID 0, which spans data across both of the 500GB internal drives for 1TB of total storage space.
