Wi-Fi Direct Puts Wi-Fi Everywhere
Currently, Wi-Fi devices have to connect to a home network of some sort before you can get them to communicate with one another. This makes Wi-Fi somewhat less efficient and easy to use than Bluetooth for certain purposes, and means that things like Wi-Fi printers can be a bit of a pain to set up. No more, however. The Wi-Fi Alliance has just announced Wi-Fi Direct.
In short, Wi-Fi Direct allows devices to connect to one another via Wi-Fi without joining any other sort of network. You can just connect your netbook directly to that printer and print. Or send music from your Wi-Fi music player to your Wi-Fi speakers without either of them being on the same network. Wi-Fi Direct doesn't add any functionality, but it does make connecting and organizing your Wi-Fi devices a hell of a lot easier.

Wi-Fi Phone Shipments Double Every Two Years
ABI Research has announced that it has found shipments of Wi-Fi enabled phones are doubling every two years. Wi-Fi is an important feature today even in phones that offer 3G connectivity. This is thanks to the fact that many 3G networks are notoriously sketchy when it comes to coverage.
ABI reports that the shipments are expected to double between 2008 and 2010. Forecasts for 2011 expect to see over 300 million Wi-Fi enabled phones ship. One major reason for Wi-Fi capability in mobile devices is that Wi-Fi takes some of the load off the carrier's network. Read more

Mobile Wi-Fi from Verizon's Wireless MiFi.
Being caught without Internet access when you really need it sucks. Thankfully, Verizon's got a solution that will stop you from ever being without Internet again, as long as you don't mind paying. The MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, made by Novatel Wireless, will connect you to the Internet almost anywhere in the country.
In essence, the MiFi is a Wireless WAN card that provides 3G Internet access to up to five Wi-Fi devices. It has integrated CDMA and WiFi antennas, and a four hour rechargeable battery. Plus it is portable; the Mi-Fi weights just over two ounces, and is about the size of a 3.5 card. That definitely qualifies as 'portable'. I'm impressed.

Alternatives to Wi-Fi Networking in Homes
In some locations, Wi-Fi isn’t a viable option for connecting devices inside the home. This can be for many reasons from interference caused by too many other wireless networks in the area or from other issues. Poor Wi-Fi connectivity has sent many consumers looking for a better way to get internet connectivity to the myriad of connected devices inside today's homes.
In my previous home, I couldn’t get a decent connection over Wi-Fi to my PS3 or Wii, even when the devices were literally inside the same room as the router. The reason for the problems with connectivity was that there were no less than 15 other wireless networks vying for the same spectrum within a stone's throw of my home. Read more

A company called Unidata has announced what it claims to be the world's first Wi-Fi Video Conference phone. Scant details were released about the handset, but what we do know is that the phone will use a 2.8-inch touch screen with a resolution of 240 x 320. Read more

Virgin America In-Flight Wi-Fi hands-on Test
Gizmodo's Brian Lam did a hands-on test (photo rather indicates a hands-off test) of the In-Flight Wi-Fi internet service on a Virgin America plane.
The Virgin America Wi-Fi rollout is still in beta, but 2009 several airlines are supposed to offer Wi-fi in planes powered by GoGo.
The bandwith of the Wi-Fi internet service is shared, so if many people watch Youtube videos the download speed drops considerably. Wi-Fi service will not be free. Virgin will charge $9.95 for flights under 3 hours, and $12.95 on flights over 3 hours.
