Intel Officially Introduces WiMAX Chip
|
Intel officially introduces a WiMAX Silicon Solution.
We reported about WiMAX first time 1 year ago. WiMAX, short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a standards-based wireless technology for providing high-speed, last-mile broadband connectivity to homes and businesses and for mobile wireless networks. Intel ships what was previously codenamed "Rosedale". The Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband interface device is based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard. The Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband interface is the first 802.16-2004 system-on-chip optimized for cost-effective WiMAX modems and residential gateways. New WiMAX faster than 3G
We do not even have 3G deployed for real and here comes already a new technology that is faster than 3G for wireless data communication.
The WiMAX (802.16) standard is backed by Intel and Nokia amongst others. Compared to 3G WiMAX is 30 times faster and can cover a 10 times larger broadcast area. On top of that WiMAX radio spectrum can be free, and carriers need fewer base stations to operate it. It is believed that WiMAX will be available for Consumers in 2-3 years.
