New Black Sharp Zaurus SL-C3100

Topic:

New Black Sharp Zaurus SL-C3100 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Sharp announces a new version of its Zaurus Linux PDA line.

The Zaurus SL-C3100 follows the SL-C3000. Obvious change is the color. The SL-C3000 is white while The SL-C3100 sports black. After the Sony PSP appeared more and more gadgets are black again and shun the Apple iPod white.
The SL-C3100 is more of a new packaging with slight changes compared to the SL-C3000 we reviewed last year than a new version.
Sharp promotes the support of TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) as a major new thing for the SL-C3100. Also Golf lessons are featured. Well it is clear that the SL-C3100 will not be sold outside of Japan, which is also sadly true for the SL-C3000.

Besides that the screen is still the same and the PDA also features a 4GB drive. No pricing is mentioned yet, but the new Sharp goes on sale in Japan on June 24th.
More details in Sharp press-release (Japanese).

New Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000 Linux PDA

Topic:

New Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000 Linux PDA Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Sharp announces a new Zaurus called SL-C1000.

The new SL-C1000 does not feature a hard-drive as its bigger older SL-C3000. The new Sharp Linux PDA seems to be optimized for online applications. Sharp also highlights a music player that supports MP3 and WMA.

Looks and design are similar to the SL-C3000. Storage is provided by 128MB Flash Memory and 64MB SDRAM. The screen is the same as in the SL-C3000 featuring 640x480 pixels. CPU is a Intel PXA270 and 416mHz. The new Zaurus still does not integrate wi-fi. The connectivity needs to be established through CF-Cards. The SL-C1000 is prepared for FOMA, Vodafone and AIR-EDGE data services.
The new SL-C1000 will ship on March 18th in Japan. No pricing announced yet.
More details in Sharp press-release. First seen on AkihabaraNews (French).

Going Online with the Zaurus SL-C3000 Linux PDA

Topic:

Going Online with the Zaurus SL-C3000 Linux PDA Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Sharp announced their latest Linux PDA, the Zaurus SL-C3000, in October for the Japanese market. The new Zaurus is the first PDA with an integrated 4GB hard-drive. It is now in stores in Japan. I published my first impressions of the Zaurus SL-C3000 a while ago. This report is describing my experience with this Linux PDA going online and surfing the web.

Quote:
"I am on the look out since a long time for the idea device to access the web anywhere I am. So I was excited to finally get my Zaurus SL-C3000 online to see if it fulfills my needs. The Zaurus SL-C3000 does not have built-in Wi-fi, so I had to first buy a CF-Slot Wi-fi card. No built-in wi-fi is really a drawback as the card sticks out of the otherwise super stylish gadget."
Read the full report and see the screen-shots.

The Japanese release Zaurus SL-C3000 sells for $819.00 at Dynamsim. Dynamism ships the Zaurus SL-C3000 configured for English.

Linux PDAs: Archos PMA430 compared to Zaurus SL-C3000

Topic:

Linux PDAs: Archos PMA430 compared to Zaurus SL-C3000 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review French site ArchosFans has a 12min video interview with a Archos Product Manager about the new Archos PMA430 from the Solutions Linux 2005 show in Paris.

As you know we had a video report about the Archos PMA430 directly from the CES 2005. What I did not realize then is that the Archos Pocket Media Assistant pma430 actually runs the QTopia Linux PDA Software package from Trolltech. This is also the same Linux PDA package that runs on the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 Linux PDA. So it makes sense to compare the two Linux gadgets a bit.

Quick Comparison between the Zaurs SL-C3000 and Archo PMA430:

Comparison Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 Archos Personal Media Assitant PMA430
CPU Intel XScale (PXA270 and 416MHz) Could not find this info (email me if you know)
Storage 4GB HDD 30GB HDD
Screen 640×480pixels / 3.7inch 320x240pixels / 3.5 inch
Size 124mm×87mm×25mm 125x79x20mm
Unique Features Full Qwerty Keyboard, Twistable Screen Built-in Wi-fi, Video Playback at 704x480/30fps, Video Recording with 512x384/30 fps
Weight 298g 280g
Price $819.00 (Japanese Market Only) at Dynamism
$799.99 at Amazon.com

So if I look at that comparison above, I wonder why did Archos not put a 640x480pixel display in the PMA430. This is a big advantage of the Zaurus SL-C3000 compared to the PMA430. The other advantage of the Zaurus is of course the QWERTY keyboard. On the other hand the Archos PMA430 has a 30GB drive compared to the 4GB of the Zaurus and of course has Video recording and more powerful Video playback. Another advantage is the built-in Wi-fi. Sharp should have built that into the SL-C3000 as well. The PMA430 is also a bit smaller and lighter as the Zaurus.
This is a tough choice, but I would say if you are looking for a hard-core PDA and you have to do lot of text input and surf the web or use remote terminals than the Zaurus SL-C3000 is the better choice. If want also a personal video player and do not surf the web much and have not much text input needs the Archos PMA430 is the better choice.

Sharp Zaurus SL-C860 Linux PDA

Topic:

Sharp Zaurus SL-C860 Linux PDA Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

The Sharp Zaurus SL-C860 is still only selling in Japan. Japanese exporter AudioCubes sells it now for the kinda affordable price of $699.00.

We reported about the Sharp Zaurus SL-C860 Linux PDA last November.

The follow-up model to the Zaurus SL-C760/C750 features the Intel PXA 255 with 400Mhz, 128MB Ram and a full color VGA screen with 640x480 pixels. The new model has more features than the sl-c760, like MP4 and MP3 player functionality, PHS mobile broadband connectivity and with an SD Card GPS functionality.

Why Sharp is not pushing this Linux based Zaurus in the USA is beyond me.

The only way is to get the Linux PDA from Japanese Stores that export Gadgets. The Zaurus SLC-860 is available at the japanese exporter AudioCubes for only $699.00.
