Twitter 360: An AR iPhone 3GS App (With Geo-tagging)
It's about damn time. Someone finally created an AR twitter app with geo-tagging. With the new Twitter 360 app, people with the iPhone 3GS will be able to see a virtual stream of tweets, displayed over where the tweeter is actually positioned. Because it relies on the built-in compass, this app is only compatible with the iPhone 3GS.
TheNextWeb states that this is the first AR Twitter app to use the geo-tagging feature. This allows different utilities like "Locate my Friends", which lets you track the position of all of your nearby friends. Whenever a certain person is selected, you'll be given an arrow showing the direction and the distance of that friend. The distance updates in real time.

Mosquitoes Augmented Reality Game For iPhone 3GS launched
I am a sucker for augmented reality apps (AR) and therefore had to try out Mosquitoes right away when developer Makayama pointed me to it.
The iPhone game Mosquitoes lets you shoot animated mosquitoes that are infesting your room. The game uses besides the camera, the compass and accelerometer to realistically let you hunt down the mosquitoes around you.
Try playing this AR Game on a rotating office chair - it works quite well.

Layar 2.0 AR Browser Finally Available For iPhone 3GS
Layar has now available for the iPhone 3GS, after it has been out on Android for a while. Layar is an open augmented reality browser. This means you can have all kinds of information provided by 3rd party developers augmented onto your reality.
I just installed the free Layar app on my iPhone 3GS and it is really a jaw-dropping experience. Even just looking out the window I can use Google local search and see marks where for instance my Pizza joints in the neighborhood are – I can’t wait to get outside to test more.

8GB iPhone 3GS Rumors Continue
We've been hearing scattered rumors of an 8GB iPhone 3GS for the last couple of weeks. Rogers Wireless has accidentally leaked information about a budget 3GS twice; once on its internal sales list, and once on its website. Both times it came out and denied that there was an 8GB 3GS on the way, citing both of the leaks as simple errors.
I didn't buy that rhetoric then, and I'm sure not going to buy it now. Boy Genius brings us information and a screenshot of a product titled, “IPHN8BLKR 3GS GSM” on the SalesCentral website. They also have inside information from some Rogers employees who claim to have seen several references to 8GB 3GS's over the last couple of weeks.

Is it just me or is the iPhone 3GS really the best Smartphone?
Here at I4U News we do a lot of coverage about Apple. Not because we are Apple fanboys, but because everything Apple does is extremely interesting to a huge part of the technology community world-wide.
I personally stayed away from Apple products for a long time. Now, for a couple weeks I have owned an iPhone 3GS and besides the disappointing battery life it is just extremely perfect.
I do not want to get into a detailed review of the iPhone 3GS here. I just want to describe the experience I had at an event this week that had several of the new touchscreen smartphones on display.

AT&T Shows Quarterly Decline Thanks to iPhone 3GS
Despite record-breaking iPhone sales and a huge increase in their number of subscribers, AT&T's revenue is down from $3.8 billion to $3.2 billion this quarter. The launch of the iPhone 3GS was the carrier's biggest sales day in history and this quarter saw a gain of 1.4 million subscribers. This has been a great quarter for ATT...so why is revenue down?
As it turns out, the iPhone is to blame for that as well. AT&T has to subsidize every iPhone sold in order to keep costs down. This means that actual iPhone sales lose them money. Of course, that doesn't mean the iPhone is hurting AT&T. A little bit of a loss now is a fair price to pay for the overall profits they're going to rake in over the next couple of years.

Consumer Reports: The Apple iPhone 3GS is #1
Consumer Reports recently compared and rated the top smartphones in the country. To no one's surprise, the iPhone 3GS was the star of the show. It beat out every other smartphone on the market in terms of overall score. What's remarkable isn't that the 3GS won, it's how narrow a margin it won by.
The test rated phones on a scale of 0 to 100. The 3GS scored a 73, the 3G and Omnia a 70, the BlackBerry 9530/G1/Bold and Samsung Epix all tied at 69, and the Pre/Curve and Insight came in at 68. The fact that none of the smartphones scored better than a 73 says that either Consumer Report's standards are too high, or that actual consumer standards are too low.

Apple Mac Version of Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS Available
Have a Mac? Want to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS with the new purplera1n? Well now you can! PurpleRa1n for Mac is out, the Windows version has already been available for a couple of days. About two weeks after the launch of the iPhone 3GS you can pretty much do with it the same things as with the iPhone 3G. It seems that UltraSn0w, the SIM unlocker for the 3G, also works for the 3GS. As always using tools like these is risky, especially at this early stage.

Overheating Issues Continue To Plague iPhone 3GS
No company is perfect. It appears that there have been issues with the white iPhone 3GS overheating and discoloring easily. The rumors didn't attract very much attention at first, but reports continue to file in.
Apple hasn't taken the issue very seriously yet. They've updated their support document entry on iPhone overheating to include the 3GS, but that's as close as they've come to dealing with the actual problem. Apple states that overheating phones will show a warning screen and lock down for all non-emergency calls. This doesn't address the primary current issue; the fact that overheating iPhones are discoloring.

Apple standardizes Naming of new iPhone to iPhone 3GS
Apple has written the name of the new iPhone with a space between 3G and S in the Apple store and on slides. The press-release that announced that Apple sold 1 million iPhone 3GS in the first weekend had no space between 3G and S and just called it iPhone 3GS. I complained in my coverage about this inconsistency.
Now Apple has apparently adopted this naming convention consistently as the company has changed the naming of the new iPhone in the Apple Store to iPhone 3GS as well.
