Search With 'My Location' For iPhone 3.0
Traveling around the country just got a lot easier for iPhone owners. Google released search with 'My Location' for the iPhone today. Now if you go to Google on your iPhone and click the 'My Location' link on the homepage you'll be able to see exactly where you are in the city. With a few clicks more you can search for clubs, bars, resturaunts, hotels, and more within a certain radius of your position.
There are a lot of possibilities with a function like this, the most obvious of which is helping people to ease the stress of moving to a new city, or making it easier to find places while traveling. If you're in an unfamiliar town and you want to find a good Italian resturaunt, just search for one with My Location and you're good to go.

3GS Battery Issues Due to iPhone 3.0?
Yesterday we reported on the numerous battery complaints plaguing the iPhone 3GS. Customers have noted that the 3GS often fails to get through a workday without a charge, and even die-hard Apple fans have had to admit that something is up. Initially we thought that the battery issues were due to the increased functionality of the 3GS, but now the problem appears to be software related.
A new report from Computerworld casts the blame squarely on the iPhone 3.0 update. The report notes that users of other iPhone types began to complain of battery issues shortly after the launch of 3.0. One user noted that, after applying the update, his 3G iPhone started to lose power at a rate of 5-10% an hour. This points to a software glitch or conflict of some sort that is consuming power at a high rate.

iPhone 3.0 Update Breaks Some Peripherals
We've got some belated bad news for you iPhone users. Apparently the 3.0 update brought some unpleasant changes with it that may or may not have been intentional. 9To5Mac is reporting that the new update has stopped all 3rd party video cables from working on the iPod Touch or any models of iPhone.
Apple-made video cables still work fine apparently, which makes me think that this change may very well have been intentional. Apple also altered the way playing a video with Apple cables works. When you played video through a cable, it used to play on both the device and the TV. Now the device just displays album art.

The iPhone 3.0 Update: Not worth $10?
Along with the launch of iPhone 3GS, last week saw the release of the iPhone 3.0 firmware update. By Monday Apple announced that over 6 million customers had downloaded the update. That's roughly 15% of the iPhone/iPod Touch owning population. While a lot of Apple customers are downloading the update, very few iPod Touch owners seem interested in paying the $10 price tag.
A study released today by Admob shows that less than 1% of Touch users have the new software. The update is free for iPhone users, which probably explains why 44% of those studied were already running 3.0. By comparison, 78% of Touch users are still running the iPhone 2.0 software released a year ago.

AIM, Beejive, IM 3.0 for iPhone 3.0 Get Push Notification
The iPhone 3.0 update finally brought push notification to the iPhone platform. When 3.0 first hit there were virtually no apps that took advantage of this new capability. After dropping the ball for a few days, the Apple app developer community finally caught up with the times. Three popular instant messenging clients, AOL instant messenger, IM 3.0, and Beejive, have been updated to offer push notification.
Previously chatting on the iPhone was plagued with difficulties. If you switched away from whatever IM client you were using, the phone had difficulty notifying you when you received a message. Now with push notification, iPhone owners can finally manage multiple conversations from different IM clients while still being able to browse the 'net or play games.

Users Report iPhone 3.0 Upgrade Problems
It's no secret that there have been some issues with the iPhone 3.0 upgrade release. Slow servers have been a bit of a problem, thanks to the sheer volume of people downloading the firmware upgrade. That is pretty much par for the course. What's surprising are the issues that the 3.0 upgrade itself is causing.
For one thing, a bunch of first and second generation iPod Touch owners have encountered WiFi problems since updating. Most of the issues deal with the iPod failing to reconnect to the network after sliding into sleep mode. Every time the iPod goes dark, users are forced to reconnect manually to the Internet. Some owners have also experienced more severe issues, like the Touch failing to recognize its own internal WiFi chip.

I am not sure if we actually need any kind of more evidence that a new iPhone 2009 will be arriving this summer, but hey it does not hurt.

Getting a Closer Look at the iPhone 3.0 OS
Since the iPhone launched the user base has been clamoring for many features. Many of the features that were lacking from the iPhone since the original product debuted were things that many felt the device should have had from the start. Little things like cut and paste that most other smartphones featured were conspicuously missing from the iPhone.
This week Apple announced a preview of the developer beta for the iPhone OS 3.0 interface. According to Apple, the new OS will offer over 1,000 new APIs and 200 new features. Among the new programming APIs will be In-App Purchases, Peer-to-Peer connections, and an app interface for accessories, access to the iPod music library, new maps API and new push notifications. Apple is mum on details of these new APIs, but it's easy enough to guess what some of them will allow. Read more

iPhone 3.0 supports USB Tethering unofficially
It is the most normal thing you would want to do with a 3G phone. Connect it via a USB cable to your notebook and use it as a modem. The iPhone said no to this unless you jailbreak it. Now a developer discovered that the new iPhone 3.0 firmware has USB Tethering built-in.
Let's hope it stays and carriers give up on the idea of selling us an iPhone and a 3G data card.
