MySpace Launches Music Products for Artists and Fans

MySpace has announced a new music service aimed at connecting artists and fans together. The global rollout of the program has started and it is called MySpace Music Video Experience. The product also includes a MySpace Artist Dashboard that is a free data and analytics tool for artists.

Users can now also purchase the tracks they listen to directly on iTunes. Functionality of the new service includes a new music video hub within MySpace. Music Video Recommendations based on what friends are watching, alphabetical Video search, and a video player with buy buttons. Read more

MySpace to Buy iLike for $20 Mill?

All morning we've been hearing whispered reports of a supposedly imminent buy-out of the iLike social media service by former social-media king MySpace. According to TechCrunch MySpace is very close to sealing the deal that will land them ownership of iLike for a cool $20 million.

This will be the virgin purchase for new MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta, who has spent the last few months since his ascension looking for ways to recapture market share from more popular media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. Apparently Van Natta thinks that iLike has what MySpace needs to regain some lost popularity. If you've never used it, iLike is a music recommendation service with 50 million registered users. It keeps track of your favorite types of music and offers recommendations based on that data.

MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe Steps Down

MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe is stepping down as CEO “in the near future” and “by mutual agreement” his contract will not be renewed with parent company News Corp, according to a release. DeWolfe will remain with MySpace in an advisory capacity and continue to serve on the board of MySpace China.

While no immediate replacement has been named, All Things Digital cites sources claiming former Facebook COO Owen Van Natta is high on the list.

The move to replace DeWolfe could come in response to MySpace losing ground to Facebook, the global social networking leader, despite MySpace claiming more registered users in the US.

MySpace for BlackBerry already has an amazing 400,000 Downloads

MySpace and RIM today announced record download numbers of the MySpace for BlackBerry application in its first week of availability with an astonishing 400,000 downloads.
Since the BlackBerry MySpace application launched on November 13th there have been more than 400,000 downloads which represents an all-time high for both MySpace and RIM in terms of first week application downloads. MySpace users Get SightSpeed

MySpace users get a new video chat application today called SightSpeed from SightSpeed Incorporated. SightSpeed says it is the first company to offer integrated video mail, public video posting and free video chat to MySpace members.

The application was built with the new MySpace developer Platform. With the application users can have real time voice chats or threaded video posts where videos are recorded and posted in a chat style. Users would create a video post on a subject and then other members of their friends group could post a video response. Read more

Yahoo!, MySpace, and Google announced the OpenSocial Foundation

Yahoo!, MySpace, and Google today announced they have agreed to form the OpenSocial Foundation to ensure the neutrality and longevity of OpenSocial as an open, community-governed specification for building social applications across the web.

The OpenSocial Foundation will be an independent non-profit entity with a formal intellectual property and governance framework; related assets will be assigned to the new organization by July 1, 2008. The foundation will provide transparency and operational guidelines around technology, documentation, intellectual property, and other issues related to the evolution of the OpenSocial platform, while also ensuring all stakeholders share influence over its future direction. Sprint Offers Free Access to MySpace Mobile

Sprint announced today that it is the first wireless carrier to offer access to MySpace Mobile on all of its web-enabled phones. Sprint says that this marks the first free direct access to the new MySpace Mobile on all web-enabled Sprint phones.

There is no official statement from either company on this deal.

MySpace Video More Popular than YouTube

MySpace launched their video sharing service just 6 month ago and it already generates more video views than Yahoo! video and Youtube.

According to comScore Media Metrix, MySpace served 1.4 billion videos in July 2006. Yahoo! served 812 million and YouTube is third with 649 million. MySpace Video is already more than twice as big as Youtube.
Now I understand why Microsoft is building their own MSN SoapBox Video sharing service.

It looks like YouTube can not translate their first mover advantage into something that cannot be copied easily by someone with a major audience. Read more

MySpace announced a partnership with Snocap a music store backend provider founded by famous Napster founder Shawn Fanning.

The news that Samsung starts a music shop this week was not really exciting news. I do not think that Samsung's music store would be any competition to Apple's iTunes.
It is a very, very different story with MySpace.com. MySpace (Alexa Rank 6) has huge number of visitors and most of them are into music. To sell digital music to them is a perfect match. Read more
